Need help finding skates

Recommended Posts

Hey all, I am looking for new skated that better fit my feet. I currently have size 7.5 CCM 6.0SE. I fail the pencil test starting from the 4th hole from the top and the 5th hole the pencil is about 1/2 inch from hole. My feet have high arches and insteps. Besides the top of my foot, i also have pain on the side of my big toes. I would go get fitted, but the skate shops here in atlanta arnt much help. I am going to Saint Louis over the holiday and was thinking about stopping in Total Hockey? Anyone have any skate suggestions? Also, im 6'5" and 220lbs.

Any other suggestions of skates I should also take a look at? I play in 2 different leagues, which has me on the ice for games 2-3 times a week.

Thanks!

well total hockey doesn't carry the 709 or the g70, so if you come to STL and plan on trying those, you're out of luck. Neither hockey shop in Saint Louis carries the flexlites either, which are a very deep fitting skate. Arn't ccm's newer skates deeper fitting? along with the reeboks. You could possibly try those for size.

Will the 709/G7/570 all have the same "fit" as the 370's (they have those in stock). Do you know if Total Hockey charges a Fitting Fee? What would be the downside to going with the lower end 370's if they fit right?

I'll also be in Omaha, NE over the holidays, any good skate shops there?

The Flexlite is more of a "wide" skate than deep in the instep area where the ankle meets the foot..IMO

The 709 and G7s have a different heel width than the G70/670/570/370 I believe. The 709 is a wider heel and the G7s are really stiff in the foot, but flexible on the ankle. The G70 and its variants have a normal width heel, but the deep and wide skate. I think the G70s and CCM U+ and its variants are deeper than any Flexlite out there.

Ok, I went to total hockey and Jonny Mac's today and tried on skates today (in saint louis)

First went to jonny macs (Didnt have time to go to their main store)...guy said i needed to go from a size 7.5 to a 9 to fit my instep, tried on a 7.5 rbk,and bauer failed pencil test miserable. he had me try on a 9 rbk, still failed pencil test, felt like they were bricks and my feet were sliding all over the place, tried on the graf 735, still failed, but they felt better.

Next was Total Hockey

Tried on the U+ 09.... Passed the pencil test on the ankle big time (skinny ankle) but failed the pencil test mid foot, better than my current skates, but not enough of a difference to spend the money, top of foot still hurt when i laced them up...next tried on the Graf 370's (the only graf with a deep instep they had)....just barely failed the pencil test (closer than any other skate i have tried). Didnt get them because i am worried about them not being stiff enough...I guess i need to look at the 570's or the 670's?? i cant see myself spending $570 for the G70's (plus the wife would kill me)....guy here told me here my right was a 7.5 and left was close to an 8, but i should stick with a 7.5....also said i have narrowish heal and suggested i needed a med width....

Any other suggestions?

How do you stay upright in everyday life? That is a small for for someone as big as you!

Hey, be nice! It's not the size, it's how you use it :P Anyway, the validity of the pencil test is something to be debated, it should not be the end all of your great skate hunt. What matters most is how you feel in something when skating in it, obviously, right? Check into the one95 and the RBK 7/9k, which are being blown out right now. I also think the ccm v10 would fit you perfectly, but they'll be impossible for you to find and try on

OK, tried on the Vapor x30's and who would have thought i passed the pencil test (barely). they felt the best of anything i had tried on, but pinched my toes little toe close to the toe box...im thinking of going vapor and getting them stretched and punched where needed, also tried on the CCM again (didnt fit), and the Graf 570 (felt horrible)....

My feet are tiny, it sucks...I also have 3 brothers, all over 6'3 and their feet are the same....

Dude, Pronger wears a small size too, like a 7.5 or 8 I think and nobody gives him crap about it, so you're not alone
