wow... so it's just like hockey except they use a ball instead of a puck? Why does that have any bearing on the type of gloves they wear.

From reading about it, it seems more like a hockey, field hockey, soccer mix. Probably requires different hand movements than what is typically done in hockey. Could explain the difference in gloves.
