New Goalie Trapper

Recommended Posts

I've been looking to upgrade from my TPS Xi Trapper For some time now

The Main reasons are the fact that it doesnt close well, a curved pocket and the fact that its turns my hand green-ish blue (don't ask why). Im looking for a mid range proced glove with a single bar pocket, any tips WILL help

last one didn't turn out too well.

i'm impartial to reebok and will probably be getting an xpulse 6.0 but if anybody wants to steer me otherwise im all for it

The Xi was sort of a budget Xceed, IIRC. The closest things to that recently, though with better pockets, have been the TPS Summits (incl. the S7, etc.) and R8s. I much, much prefer the more Bionic-esque feel of the R10, but you would find that a little different than the Xi. There are some great deals to be had on the R8s currently, in fact. Check eBay, especially the eBay stores; there's one seller who I believe has R8 blocker/trapper sets for $199.

Oyk, did you ever get to compare the R10 to your Bionic? If you did, I'd be really interested to read your thoughts.

So I've heard. From what I understand, the maritimes got hit hard by a run of LHS closures, and the ones that are left tend to view goalie gear as a bit of a liability (high cost, low margin).

Thats pretty much whats happening, so i probably will have to order online, do you have any recommendations other than tps that wouldnt hurt my wallet too much? i like tps but i only need a trapper because i love my blocket, but most products on ebay are combos. I was on goalie monkey earlier today and saw an xpulse 6.0 for 70$, would that be any good?

I am still trying to find a dealer local for TPS. All they have here are Vaughn, RBK and Bauer. I am so worked up I am thinking about opening my own store to be goalie only.

I have checked out the Battram Nexus on their site and it looks really similar to my Bionic.

Unfortunately you get what you pay for. If you get a 70$ glove its going to be a 70$ glove. What level of play to you play at? Ice or Roller?

I was wondering because its on clearence and was 159.99, but that might not be a good thing, to answer your question though, i play in a bantam house league right now, and will be moving up to midget next year, so the more protection, the better

I would look at some better used equipment. I don't think you will be happy with the x-pulse

Seconded. For that amount you could get a very good set of used pro-level gloves, and for $40-$50 more, maybe even brand new.

Used pro gear is always a better investment than new price-point gear.

I know I'll sound stupid by saying this, but where do you think I could get my hands on said used pro level gloves?

Now I even feel stupid, but I've only bought new before and that got me TPS XI's, would I look for these gloves like I looked for my used RBK 8k's? Or should I just look for new Pro Spec equipment online somewhere?

No reason to feel stupid; it's a good question.

One important distinction: pro-spec does not equal pro-level. Pro-spec simply means that the gear measures within all NHL specifications. Pro-level (or pro-grade) has to do with the quality of the equipment: the RBK Premier Series pads, for example, as opposed to the 5K, 6K, 7K, 8K, etc. Pro-level gear will generally use higher quality foams and materials, and has a higher standard of construction and quality control. There is a good deal of pro-spec gear that is not of pro quality.

The obvious places to look for used pro-grade gear are local stores that deal in used gear (eg. PIAS), eBay, pro team sales (ie. of pro-return gear), and online boards (GSBB, Goalielife, Goalie Equipment World, etc.). Most of these boards (with the exception of Goalielife) are not great information resources, but are relatively active marketplaces. There is, from time to time, a little goalie gear in the MSH classifieds.
