getting rid of a stitch

for those of you who don't know, a stitch (at least what i know it as) is when you're running and all of a sudden, your stomach/abs/intestines start hurting. can someone explain either why this happens or how to prevent it or get rid of it?

Let's see if my gym class work is correct. I think you mean a side stich which is also known as a cramp. This mean's that your body is not receiving enough oxygen. That's all I know!
