Boiling Skates?

Recommended Posts

A guy I know was told by an ex NHL player to boil new skates in water, rather than bake them. Anyone ever heard of this before? I haven't. Skates can get pretty wet anyway, so maybe it's not that crazy.

when did he play, 1960?

it's actually appauling at how little most nhlers know about equipment... there's a fair number who dont even know what hollow they skate on.

Wasn't that the pre-bakable skates way to "bake" them?

A long time ago when I was just starting out I was told to put them on and run hot water from the bath tub over them, but those skates were I think leather/nylon, and not all the new composite/synthetic material of todays skates.

Second that. Very true. But unlike us gearwhores or equipment pros, the NHL-ers are better at hockey as a rule:)

I was originally going to reply about how crazy that was but paused and thought it through.

Before skate ovens/thermoformable, guys used to talk about putting them in the tub with hot water. So I guess it is not that crazy.

Perhaps today's materials may not respond as well, but as long as they were thoroughly dried after I guess it would work. I was never brave enough, but to each their own.

that's like saying to keep your car in good working order you need to feed it the choicest oats, brush its coat everyday, and make sure to re-shoe it once a year!

keep with the times.

I was told back when Blake was skating in Vapor 10's he would put them on and get in the hot tub to form them.
