Shops/Rinks in DC

Recommended Posts

Just wondering what the situation was like down in the DC area and surrounding suburbs. Thanks in advance.

Depends on how far you're willing to go. Kettler in Arlington has a good shop, but you won't find much of the somewhat niche stuff there, nor will you find many options in terms of colors. I've heard good things about Fairfax and Ashburn's shops, though I've never actually been to either. Mike's Sporting Equipment in Waldorf Maryland (at the rink out there - Capital Clubhouse) has a pretty good selection, decent prices, and the guy that owns it is a really good guy.

Of course, Waldorf is a good 45 minutes from DC in moderate traffic, and Ashburn is 45 minutes away in good traffic, so "surrounding suburbs" is a term I've used pretty loosely.

DRM sports at the ARC rink in Rockville, Md is probably the best shop in the area. prices and selection are comparable to giant or monkey. the owner "drew" is full of knowladge and can answer any question and properly outfit you.

Going to the surrounding suburbs can take anywhere from 10 mins to 3 hours depending on traffic. It once took me an hour to go from Georgetown to Kettler with traffic, closures, and foolish DC drivers.

Laurel's rink has a pretty nice shop.

+1 for the Laurel shop. Mike the owner is great to deal with and very knowledgeable.

Pretty good selection in stock and always willing

to order stuff no problem.

Drew up at Rockville is my go to guy. Ashburn can have a real nice sale selection at the back of the store and the clearance stick section. I have trouble getting to Laurel b/c of traffic and I am less than 15 miles away. BTW NOVA enjoy that purple line headache.

Bumping this as I may be there if bolts/caps goes to five games. Just seeing what's out there in terms of shops.

I'm not sure if it is alright to bump this, but I just wanted to update this thread and say that the Prince William Ice center is re-opening towards the end of this month as well. Website says it will have a pro shop, one NHL sized rink and one OLY sized rink.

It's about 3 minutes from my house (Woodbridge/Dale City, North VA area), so it beats traveling the 40-50 minute drive to Kettler if all I want is some ice-time. I'll definitely have to step inside the pro-shop once it's actually open to see what they offer in terms of selection/pricing.

In the winter-time the Harris Pavilion in Manassas usually converts into an outdoor rink, but I'm pretty sure there are no actual hockey activities taking place there.
