What's the likelihood of a messed up FBV machine (angled or damaged wheel?)

Recommended Posts

I just started using FBV a few weeks ago, tried the 100/50 and liked it a lot. The difference was subtle, but I liked it. Anyhow, I got this done at a hockey shop many hours from where I currently live (back in my hometown). I trust this shop completely, and a friend of mine did the sharpening. I did notice that when looking at the blade, the 100/50 had almost no perceptible "hollow" to it. It was hard to tell with the naked eye that it wasn't just completely flat all the way across. Once on the ice though, I was a believer.

Anyways fast forward to a few days ago and it was time for another sharpening. I went in to a local hockey shop which I routinely use for sharpening, and have been happy with their work, and the guy who I most trust there is the one who did this sharpening, so I figured it was all good. This was my first time using them for an FBV sharpening though. It appears to me that the FBV sharpening I got is a little cocked to the side, or offset on the blade or something. I put a straight edge on it and it seems almost like the wheel might not have been perfectly horizontal, to the naked eye it looks pretty different than the previous FBV sharpening I got. I put a straight edge on it and even though we're talking about hundredths of an inch here, I would swear that this sharpening is not symmetrical. I have not skated on these skates but they look strange enough that I'm planning on bringing my backup skates to the rink tonight in case I'm right and these skates are messed up.

I don't know the equipment that the FBV uses for sharpening and so I don't know what sort of calibrations or adjustments are possible on it, but for those that do, is there any possibility of the sharpener being out of whack somehow? Or maybe the wheel being messed up in some fashion?

It's POSSIBLE....more likely he didn't have the Holder set correctly and the blade wasn't centered with the wheel. If you aren't happy, bring them back to the shop..more often than not they'll touch em up for free for ya.

This is exactly correct. When applying an FBV or regular ROH, the height of the holder must be adjusted for each skate as a matter of routine. If that step was skipped or just messed up (more experienced guys often do it by eye and sometimes miss), that would cause one edge to be higher than the other. Like wex said, take them back and have them touched up.
