One35 Jr Skates

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I'm about to pick up a new pair of skates for my older son. He is 9 yrs old, 4'8", ~75 lbs, and predominately plays defence when he is not in goal. To date he has played house league only (minor atom) and although he cannot be considered an elite level atom skater, he has certainly improved over the past year and is well able to hold his own during games.

We've been shopping for skates and he has narrowed his preference to either the One35s or One55s from last year's Bauer line (both size 2.5). I have a few questions in selecting between these skates and hope that those more wise in these matters here may be able to offer some advice.

1. Will the One35 skates hold up for a whole season? I have seen where others haver recommended these skates for recreational use only. They are by no means over stiff and I have heard that some people find they lose support after playing in them for an extended period. Worst case here is that my son plays out the whole season which would translate into 2 or 3 games a week with an additional hour of powerskating class. I think these skates would likely be alright as he is only 75lbs and not likely to over stress them. Comments....

2. I'm sure the stiffer One55 skates would hold-up fine for his full season but my issue with these is that we are looking at a much stiffer boot. I don't want to curtail his current skating developement by throwing him into a boot that is too stiff. I know that elite skaters need the stiffness to develope full power and take full advantage of the skates but my son is still learning and might need a more forgiving skate as well as one that will let him develope a little more ankle strength. In addition the One55 skates are about 40% more expensive - now I am willing to pay if the One35 may not last but I'don't want to throw money away either. Comments....

Whateve advice or experience anyone might have with these two skates in the junior range would be very much appreciated.

Thanks

Crash

I've seen players at that level and size do just well with both models. I don't think either one would be a ghastly mistake. Few questions:

What kind of skates was he skating in before? How often? How much were they broken down after the season? Did he feel any differences in the fit of either model?

Over the past year he has been playing in Mission Pure Fly skates (both through winter and summer league as well). He played twice a week and had a powerskating class once a week in the regular season and he has played around 90 mins a week throughout the summer. The Mission skates seem to have held up fairly well and still provide pretty good support although they are noticably less stiff than when new. I don't know where the "Pure Fly" would rate in comparision to the Bauer line, so it is difficult for me to compare.

With respect to the two bauer models, he found both similiarly comfortable. He remarked that he had a little more ankle pressure with the One55s (understandable as they appear to have more foam around the ankle area) but this would likely disappear after baking. Overall I think he found the One35s slightly more comfortable and the 55s a little more supportive but from what I could see both fit very well and in a very similiar fashion: good ankle lock in both and no painful areas.

Thanks for the help,

definately the right move - the one35s and 55s we sold a couple years ago; the 55s held up all season (kids playing 3-4 hours a week) compared to the kids who were using the 35s. Most of those were broke by jan/feb. they had tape around them to hold them together, etc.

quite a bit more expensive but that jump is 10fold worth it.
