Skate Sharpening!

The guys at my local rink suck massive ass at sharpening its ridiculous...For me to get my skates sharpened good, I have to drive like 30 miles to hockey giant or monkey... no bueno...so what i want to know is the skate mate good to use? Or the skedge? or the blade doctor? any help would be greatly appreciated.. If it helps im a beginner ice skater

If I was in your situation, I'd get another set of steel to alternate with, and either make the drive out at half the frequency, or do mail order sharpening.

There are no cheap hand tools that effectively sharpen skates that I've ever seen. vek's suggestion of two sets of steel is probably the best low cost approach. If you have a bit more to spend, the Blackstone X01 sharpener is under $1000 and you could do them yourself whenever you needed to.

pro-filer actually works alright if you are smart enough to use it right. you won't get the blade ultra sharp and it takes time to do it right but it works good enough, especially for a beginner skater.

Where in So Cal do you live? I could recommend a few places in Los Angeles that may be closer than Giant and Monkey.

Temple City? Man, you're down the street from me. I live in Alhambra. I get my skates sharpened in Burbank at the Pickwick Ice Center. Ask for Bo St. John. He's the man over there when it comes to sharpening, but he only works on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Tell him Tony sent you!
