time for new skates. sizing question

Recommended Posts

I've been using the same pair of Mission Proto Vi skates for about 10 years. I need new bearings and wheels and given that the skates are on the verge of falling apart I figure it's about time to get new skates. Snooping around the interwebs it seems the Mission Boss '08 skates are still available in a decent selection of sizes at clearance prices. I may be able to find a pair of the Boss Black skates in my size but selection on these is more limited. My only issue is sizing. Since they are clearance items I won't be able to return or exchange them. My 10 year old Proto Vi skates are size 8D and fit pretty well. They may be a tad on the large size but I have never had any issues with the fit. I had my feet measured once and one foot is a 7.5D and the other a 7E. All of my shoes are 7.5D. From what I understand Mission sizing has changed a good bit over the last few years so I'm not sure what size would work for me.

I went to a shop today and the only inline skates they had were Mission DSX and Mission BSX. I tried the DSX on in a size 7E and they seemed about right in length. Maybe a bit wide but I didn't really tighten down the laces. There was maybe a 1/4 inch of room in the toe. Given this info I have a few questions:

1) I felt like my heel may not have been all the way back in the skate. On any pair of skates will my foot move back in the skate as they are broken in and thus create more room in the toe?

2) Does anyone know how the Mission Boss and Mission Boss Black skates compare in sizing to Proto Vi skates from 10 years ago?

3) Same as above, but compared to the DSX?

ok I called ePuck and hockeymonkey and they both said only the 2010 Mission sizing is different. So while the 2010 skates should be sized down 1.5 to 2 sizes anything prior to the 2010 skates should fit same as shoe size.

Now my dilemma is to order the same 8D I've been wearing for the last 10 years or to order a 7.5D which is my shoe size. Does anyone know what the actual difference a half size makes?

The sizing on the 08's and 09's were both different than the traditional Mission fit. You got some bad info.

The 08's and 09's are a size to a size and a half smaller than whatever your Proto VI's were. The 2010 sizes are a size down from that.

If you were in an 8 Proto VI I'd try in the 6 to 6.5 range.

so you're saying the 2010 Mission's can be 2.5 sizes smaller? If Bauers are 1.5 sizes smaller than shoe size, and the new Missions have been resized to match Bauer sizing, something doesn't add up. Or are the older (pre-'08) Missions larger than shoe size?

Basically it broke down like this for me:

I have always worn a size 12 in Mission since they came out up until the 08 Boss skates. In these size 12's I had maybe just a little bit of wiggle room and my toes were not quite touching the toe cap.

When the Boss' 08 skates came out I went with a size 10.5. This actually fit slightly tighter than before as my Toes were just slightly feathering the toecap. For some people this is the ideal fit however I felt I maybe would have been better off with an 11.

Starting with the 2010 models they changed their sizing again. In the 2010 Boss SE I have a size 10 skate and it fits just about the same as my old (original Mission sizing) size 12's with just a little bit of wiggle room and not quite touching the cap. Like I said some people like it a little tighter and I could have gone down a half size to a 9.5 but I prefer a little more room.

So basically the original Mission fit that worked for me was a 12, the 08's and 09's for that same fit i should have had an 11, and now for that same fit in the 2010 SE's I have a 10.

thanks for the info. Sounds like I should get a 7 if I want the same fit and a 6.5 if I want a little tighter. Although now looking online I can't find a 6.5 in the '08 or '09 so I guess a 7 it will be.

Just a follow up:

I ended up getting a pair of '08 Mission Boss skates in size 7D. The length was perfect. My toes feather the toe cap when standing straight up. The width, on the other hand, was not. These are much narrower than my old Missions. The heel is fine, but the outside of the front of my foot was getting killed. I could only wear the boots for a few minutes before the outside of my feet went numb. There was also a spot on the outside of my ankle bone that was hurting. Took them to a LHS to get them baked, which helped a whole lot with the ankles but the width was still a problem. I left them overnight to get the width stretched out and now they are perfect.

I'm wondering if I really should have gotten a 7EE if I had to get the skates stretched out. Or would the heel be too wide then? Maybe my feet just aren't the right shape for Missions any more.

My older Missions from around 10 years ago fit my feet like a glove. I have the 2010 Mission Soldier SE and found that they fit similar in the heel region, but it is a bit more narrower in the toe area. If I could combine the front of my Bauer RX25 skates with the back of my Mission Solder skates, I would have the perfect fitting skate.
