Broke my wrist

Recommended Posts

So I'm a left shooter and broke my right wrist (not hockey related accident). Therefore I cant really use the next 3 to 6 weeks improving my stick work. I also dont see working on my skating as possible (at least this early into it) as I couldnt even tie my skates. The way I see it all I can really do is ride a stationary bike or run to keep my cardio up.

Any suggestions on other things to do to stay hockey ready until I'm cleared to play?

Well first and foremost, do what the docs tell you. But if the docs say you can, get your mom, dad, sister, brother, girlfriend, boyfriend, bestfriend, random dude you just met.... to tie your skates so you can at least do some edge work or something. Again though, only if the docs say you can.

How old are you and where did you break it? I broke my left wrist twice (Right handed shooter) and both times it was 6 weeks. I think I just kept my lower half active as I couldn't play video games or anything haha.

I'm 37 and I broken the radius at the base of the wrist. According to the discharge papers I also broke the other bone but the doctor never talked about that one. He only told me about the radius.

I thought about having someone tie my skates but I'm not so sure. Its been a while since I let someone tie something for me. lol. And skate tying is a pretty particular kinda personal thing. But if the doc says its okay perhaps I'll give it a try.

I go to the orthopedist tomorrow.

second time i broke it I took out the knobs of both and had to have it pinned back together. Hopefully no surgery for you because it can suck. I had a pin through one of my tendons for about a month and a half and I couldn't bring my ring finger to full extension.

they make those hooks for tightening your skates, and I think I just did that on my roller blades and I was able to tie them regularly once they were tight.

I broke my wrist twice last year so I feel your pain. My advice is to not jump back on the ice before your wrist is ready. If I would have been more careful I could have probably saved another month in a cast.

As far as training goes: Stationary bike, Sprints, Ab workouts, Running Stairs and Pylometrics. Despite being in-season when I broke mine the second time I put a lot of emphasis on plylometrics working in a Crossfit gym and came back to the more explosive and quicker than before.

Don't get discouraged. That was hardest for me. Focus on building some quickness and explosiveness along with strict diet and such.

Thanks for the suggestions. I have been on the bike a couple of times. The point about the diet is a good one. I've been a little depressed and angry over this so I've been doing more sitting around and drinking beer than I should. I've done pylo in the past. This will be a good time to start up again.

Thanks.

Digging this thread up from a long time ago. I broke my wrist (left wrist, r-h shooter) quite some time ago too (back in May) and fully recovered in August (Scaphoid bone apparently takes twice as long to recover).

Anyways what I'm struggling with is rehab do you guys have any exercise that are good? Needless to say that in 3 months, I've lost quite a bit of strength in my left arm..
