Shin Guard Repair Question

Recommended Posts

Thought this may get lost in the gear repair thread.

Short story, I dough through a bag at shop while I purchased the 7K shoulders and found some unused JOFA 5090 shin guards, problem is one of them is a 17" and the other is a 16". I use 16" but for $20 could not pass them up. Never worn removable liners ect. The shop owner thought he grabed the same size but did not.

I just wanted to know if you take a 17" shin guard and cut an inch off to make it a 16" will it fit as if it where a 16"? Such as how far it sits off of the leg, By the way it is a JOFA 5090 model. I currently have one 16" and one 17". Think the plastice shell is the same size, just maybe longer? Just do not want to cut it and have it stick out farther then the 16", may get caught doing cross over while skating.

If anyone has done something like this let me know if it could have a good outcome before I hack on it with dremal tool.

I don't see any problem with what you're proposing. I have 5090s too and if I were cutting off some material, I'd remove the black binding material and save it, then cut off the amount desired. Then to clean it up I'd reattach the binding portion by melting a few sewing holes at the bottom (heating up a sewing awl) and sewing the binding back on with wax thread. Only problem I can think of is that the shell may lose some of its shape at the bottom, but that is easily fixed (as I recently found out) by heating the plastic up with a heat gun and molding it with your hands.

Might be a stupid question, but have you talked to the shop to see if they have the matching 16" guard to maybe do an exchange? Would probably be easier than trying to modify one.

They do not have the other 16" or 17" shin guard, the owner mistakenly took two that did not match at a sale in Atlanta when the team was selling stuff, not sure if you buy a box of stuff ect at sale.

I've chopped shins before. A pair of cheapo's that were a little too long. I used a hand saw though, not a dremel. I didn't notice any change in the fit afterwards.

If you want a decent finished product, go with theflash0000's plan.

That's what I figured, just thought I would check to make sure before people started giviing you advice on chopping them up. It sounds like at least a couple of people have done it before though, so it seems like it should work. Good luck, hope it all works out for you.

It is not a big deal at all to cut the shin pads to shorten them. If you have a heat gun you could heat them up a litte. That will make them easier to cut. If you want you can remove the black piece that is sewn to the bottom of those particular shin pads cut them, then reapply, no one will even know the difference.

I'd do that. Then heat them up with the heat gun and mold them a little so they fit your legs good
