are my gloves not protective enough?

i've had these gloves for about a year and i've never had a problem with them until now. i have the model without PE inserts, so it's just high density foam. i've never had a problem with protection with just regular play, but i blocked a shot today (wasn't a really hard shot) on the back of my hand for the first time and i has dull pain for the rest of the practice. should i get some more substantial gloves?
