Nice article... anyone who thinks all male figure skaters are gay, hasn't met the wives of the two russian coaches who run my kids power skating classes. Drop dead gorgeous.

Moreso than teasing, I think the cost factor pushes a lot of families out of figure skating. Hockey is expensive enough for us... competitive figure skating is ridiculous. And they start pushing you so young. My daughter figure skated for a year or two... within a few months they are trying to get you into private lessons multiple times a week... then recommending private dance and gymnastics classes. I know parents of young kids (6-7 years old) shelling out 10's of thousands of dollars a year, and it's considered normal.
