Sharpening problem?

Recommended Posts

I've been getting my skates sharpened at the same place for a while now. It's a old-fashioned LHS with a great reputation. But the last couple of sharpenings have felt odd on my feet despite not changing my specs. What I've noticed is this: If I run my fingernail across the hollow toward either edge (inside or outside) I hit a definite "ridge" right just before the edge. It's enough to stop my fingernail and cause it to "click" over the edge. That doesn't seem right. I'm getting a 5/8 hollow. The shape of the hollow should be an arc of a circle. It's steepest at the edge, but the angle is still very close to flat (or it should be). There shouldn't be anything to catch my fingernail.

Is this common (the ridge)? I never tried running my fingernail across the blade before, so I have no idea. Like most of you, I've tested sharpness by checking if the edge could scrape my fingernail. My skates do that just fine. But that ridge seems wrong.

i know what you are talking about. it appears on the outside edge everytime you sharpen but normally it is honed off with a side stone. problem is that side stones wear out fast and then won't get it all. might want to get your own stones. i don't know why it appears sometimes on the inside edge but i feel it on my skates sometimes as well.

feeling odd on your feet and having a bad edge are two different things. if you feel odd on your feet, it is most likely because your edges are uneven or perhaps they were uneven and you got used to it and the new sharpening leveled them.
