Cleaning out equipment?

I'm playing hockey for the first time competitively since going through puberty and am having some trouble cleaning my equipment. I hang everything out on our clothesline after each practice/game, but all it does is make it dry. I tried using the Febreze sports thing, but to no avail. I can throw things like my skating socks, hockey socks, jersey, Under Armour and shin guard liners in the washer with a small amount of detergent and tumble try with no repercussions, but I can't throw anything else in there because I have a top loading washer with an agitator (conveniently the same role I am ;)). I heard that you're supposed to spray 50% rubbing alcohol mixed with 50% water and let it air dry, but I don't want to smell like a doctor's office when I'm out on the ice.
