Mid line shin pad help?

Recommended Posts

I am looking for a new pair of shin pads and the local shop has a reebok 5k for $50 and a 3k $35 from last year that I liked. I play adult league hockey a couple nights a week. I was trying to stay in the $50 range, any recommendations on the two? The new 5k's have that nice quick strap system but the older 3k's have an additional strap above the calf to keep them in place and tighter to the knee. Anyone have any experience with either and / or have an opinion. The 3k's almost seem to have a nicer padding system than the 5k's but I'm stupid and don't know much different. I tried to post the pictures but this site will not let me use hockeygiant's link for some reason (they have the best pictures of the two. You can go there and look if you would like, they have both the 2009 3k and the 2011 5k.

Thanks for your thoughts

If you can afford to wait and have the time / patience to look, for that price range you can find newish, top of the line pads off ebay, craigslist etc. I've got ST16's, XXXX, one90's, one95's, 9k's, V10's all off ebay in new to near new condition for under your price range.

As to the diff between the 2, pick the one that fits you the best and most comfortable. If it doesn't sit right or the straps don't work for you then you will end up hating them. For various reasons out of the group I've listed the one90 / one95 are my pick because of how they sit on me and the excellent calf and knee strap they have.

This is absolutely true. Both of these entry level pads offer similar protection with a main difference being that the 5K has a better calf wrap. Also if you want to stay in that range and buy from HG, then the One75s are an excellent pad for the price.

I use those. I love 'em! Were they new or used? Either way, I think that's a good deal.

Especially if they were brand new.

So I have not been playing hockey that long and never had a shin guards without straps. What is the preferred method to secure them; tape, aftermarket straps or some sort, or something else? Thanks.

Usually just clear tape right under the knee cap and around for me.
