Well...just shed some light on the other side of that argument, there are sports podriatrists out there that can effectively build an orthotic, and trim and alter it to work in the skates.

My daughter is a competitive figure skater and has successfully used prescription orthotics for years...as have a great many of her training partners, coaches and competitors.

The idea that superfeet could work, but that a custom orthotic couldn't just doesn't make much sense. That said, you do need to find someone who knows what they are doing. Further, you may well need a deeper skate than what you currently use in order to accomodate the orthotic.

When my daughter needs new skates (and they make hockey skates look like a bargain) she trys on skates with the orthotic.

Anyhow, my advice would be to investigate all options that are available.

The Superfeet website does a good job explaining how their insoles help you with pronation and alignment. http://www.superfeet.com/activity/hockey.aspx

I had a follow up visit today with my foot doctor. I brought my New skates back in after approximately 6 hours of ice time. I also brought in my Superfeet Yellow.

We decided that the Superfeet yellow were a better fit and better for my feet. He wanted me to clarify a few things that I discussed on this forum.

1) Pronation can be seen without an X ray, but other bone alignment issues will only be seen in an X-Ray. For a proper diagnosis..get an X-ray.

2) full length "plastic"orthotics will not fit properly in a hockey skates. the word "Orthotic" is used very loosely. Anything put in your skate designed to change your natural foot is considered and "orthotic". Superfeet is considered an orthotic. Superfeet fit because they are designed for hockey skates, and only have "plastic" for the heel and arch. The rest of the insole can be cut to fit.

3) The severity of the foot problem and how "custom" an orthotic will determine if it will fit in a skate.

4) Most hockey skaters have a problem with pronation. Insoles like Superfeet, Shock Dr., and Graf Sidas work very well to correct this issue.

I posted this hoping to help other skaters on this forum.

How many times have I said on this post alone, "go see a Doctor". I am just offering my experience and my Doctors 30 plus years of experience in this field. It took me 2 months just to get an appointment... and today's appointment he didn't even charge me or my insurance. He wanted to help me. I don't mean to be misleading....I wish someone would of given me this information years ago...We are all adults and if you think you have a serious foot issue...See a Foot Doctor. My doctor simply believes through all his years of experience that most people are not wearing the correct skate for their foot type. This is why he wanted to see my old and new skates. From his point of view everybody comes in to his office and says, I need an orthotic". Come to find out the skate does not fit right. With "my" situation and "my" pronating problem Superfeet work for me. He generally sees many patients that only need proper arch support. He does not recommend a 350+ dollar orthotic for minor pronation and arch issues. Superfeet are 40 bucks and problem solved. He does not sell or indorse insoles in his office, just has samples to show people.

Rubo and Jordan...I respect your opinion and understand that Superfeet are not a "fix-all". This is the 5th Foot Doctor I have seen in 10 years. He is the first to take an X-ray's and the first to ask to see my skates....Everybody else said, "yep, you are pronating... buy a 350.00 Orthotic".
