anotherlin 0 Report post Posted November 22, 2004 When they start not to roll :)Personnaly, I never clean my bearings, but I oil them about every 3 weeks.Well, I never clean them inside, I remove the dirt on the outside, lay them flat, and then spray WD40 on them. I let them for a night, so the oil can fully penetrate, then I wipe the excess of oil and put them back.Works fine, at least for me.A thorough cleaning, removing the gasket etc, takes just too long... Shorthanded67 0 Report post Posted November 22, 2004 I do exactly the same thing but instead of using WD-40, I use something in an orange spray can called "Speed Skate Lube". I bought a case years ago when it was promoted as "The Offical Lubricant of Roller Hockey International".I just spray a bit into a small bowl and let the bearings soak overnight and wipe off the excess. For all I know, this may not do a thing to help the bearings long-term but this has been my method for years. I've got that little thing that makes me think if I pop that shield off the bearing, it ain't going back on! :P

mickz 107 Report post Posted November 23, 2004 I flip the skates upside down and spin the wheels. When I see that they're spinning sluggish or slow, I take them out and clean them.
Fedorov91 0 Report post Posted November 24, 2004 Yep, I just use WD-40 every now and then. I have used that Speed Skate Lube before and its good but a little pricey, like $7-$8 a can I think. So I just use WD40 cuz its cheaper and pretty much the same thing (they smell the same anyway ) Then sometimes when my actual wheels get really dirty I just use some rubbing alcohol to get rid of the extra dirt and stuff. Eazy_b97 1 Report post Posted November 24, 2004 I thought WD-40 was bad? I remember suggesting it before and just getting bombarded. Something about it eventually slowing down the wheels. I'm not much of a "cleaner", I'll take'em down and whipe'em off, but generally when I pop out bearings I screw'em up anyways.
kovalchuk71 212 Report post Posted November 25, 2004 That was me Eazy lol....You shouldn't use WD-40, because it ends up gunking your bearings up and really help towards them wearing down......
anotherlin 0 Report post Posted November 25, 2004 That was me Eazy lol....You shouldn't use WD-40, because it ends up gunking your bearings up and really help towards them wearing down...... No offsense, but that's BS.The only problem with oil (any brand) is that the grease inside the bearings gets out. Once you start oiling, you have to oil them all the time, every two-three weeks.I really don't think that WD40 is worst or better than the overmarketed, overpackaged, and overpriced "super skate speed lube oil". I never had any problem. In fact, I've even oiled the bearings of my k2 "fitness" skates with olive oil for fun, worked just fine. Though I will never try that on my hockey skates.
