CCM U+ CL Skate fit issues - heel fit in 9D vs 9.5D

Recommended Posts

So here's my story: I bought a brand new pair of CCM U+ CL skates off eBay recently, after having a chance to try a pair on beforehand. Size 9.5D. Very comfortable, but after baking and a few skates I was pretty sure they were too big (too much room between toe and toe cap). So I went and found a pair of 9Ds on eBay which I got a few days ago. They were advertised as being never baked/never skated on (the 9.5Ds were 100% brand new in box), but when I got them they looked as though they had been baked/molded. The seller said they had been worn around the house a few times but never baked. Not sure if that will relate to my concern.

Anyway, after baking and skating in the 9Ds, it felt like the back of my heel was really pressing into the back of the boot, as if there weren't enough of a heel pocket. Didn't have this issue in the 9.5D. As I still have both pairs of skates, I took a look at the two beside each other and noticed the shape of the foam in the heel was very different between the two:

In the 9.5s (on the right), there looks to be considerably more foam in the back of the ankle, and it comes right together in the middle, creating a nice heel pocket below. In the 9s, there looks to be less foam overall, and also a large gap right at the back of the ankle. When walking/skating in them I can feel the back of my ankle pressing into the stitching seam that runs up the back of the boot, causing discomfort. Note: both skates were heat molded using Superfeet insoles, I just put the stock ones back in the 9.5s.

Obviously I don't have much recourse here, other than to sell them as-is and start over, but I'm wondering if anyone has observed similar differences between different sizes of these skates, or even similar variations within the same size? Surely the foam couldn't have been pressed apart and compressed that much by someone wearing them without baking. Thanks in advance for your input.
