Herniated Disc

Recommended Posts

Hey Everyone,

Just looking for some advice, thoughts. I've just been diagnosed with a herniated disc and I'm very frustrated. Can't play hockey, or even train much. Has anyone gone through this? How long was the road to recovery? Any advice? Thanks alot. I'm really frustrated that I can't play and that its going to cost me a fortune for Physio. Im in Toronto and started going to this place called Physio Plus and praying that they fix me up soon.

I have a 9mm herniated disk in my lower back, a 3mm one in my neck and another one that is bulginging a little. When they first happened the pain would sometimes be unbearable. I am fortunate to have a friend who is a good Chiropractor that works with Orthopedic Surgeons. He did alot of ice/heat therapy and streching that did the trick for me. There are alot of bad Chiros and Drs out there so be very carefull. Don't let anyone manipulate you in a twisting motion to "adjust you". That puts alot of pressure on your spine. When you are at home lay on the floor with your legs pulled up a little and a pillow between them. Throw an ice pac on and watch TV. This will help keep the swelling down. Another thing that worked for me is a gravity table or chair. It's one of those contraptions you hook your ankles /legs in and hang upside down. The theory is it takes pressure off the disk.

I am fortunate because I have never had surgery on them. Before you let anyone cut on you make sure you get a second or even third opinion. There are studies that show back surgrery for disks are a 50/50 shot. They cannot guarantee that it will help with the pain and can weaken the back. No one can tell you how long it will take to recover. You may get to a point where the pain is tolerable and just continue on with life as usual.

I been there...good luck

I feel your pain. At 25 I was diaged with 2 Herniated Disc and 1 they considered "Slightly Herniated." I went through all the BS with the MRI, follow ups and physical therapy. I went to one PT that I saw little improvement with and they suggested surgery. I wanted to avoid surgery at all costs. I changed after about 4 months to a place that really helped. To keep the story short they got me on a core program and taught me all the proper techniques on certain lifts and movements. Im now 30 and have been back skating 3-5 times a week. I still get occasionally tight/pain in the area of the herniations and on the left side of my core, but I know what to do as far as correcting my self.

Only advice... make sure you are feeling results at PT. Make sure they are teaching you how to strengthen your core and showing you how to do it with perfect technique.

Wow mine seems very minor in comparison to you guys. I'm glad I went for treatment when I did. They're saying I should feel Improvement in 6 weeks with therapy. Thanks guys, this gives me hope that I'll be back playing by the fall
