Junior to senior skates...transition

Recommended Posts

My son is in need of new skates ( 12, plays AAA, strong skater) . He is now making the move from junior to senior size skates.

Sad day dollar wise, but that isn't my question.

There is a jump in stiffness, I understand that.

I have also thought that as the sizes went up the stiffness increased; but, I was told yesterday by someone who ought to know, that a size 10 senior is the same stiffness as a size 6 senior.

So, which is it? help appreciated.

As far as I can tell the stiffness generally corresponds to the price point in each line, not the size. The higher the price, the stiffer they seem to get as they're built to hold up to a more intense beating. This is just a generalization though. Have him try them on and see what he likes.

They probably use the same materials in the different sizes so it will be similar stiffness between a size 6 and 10 of the same skate. A size 6 might seem stiffer if you squeeze it since it's a more compact boot and doesn't give you a lot of leverage to bend it as a size 10 would, or something along those lines.

I asked this question to my Bauer rep years ago - Junior size to Junior size, slight stiffness variations between sizes. Senior size to Senior size, same stiffness. Going between a junior right to senior though (I'm guessing he was in a 5/5.5 going to a 6/6.5?) won't make a difference if he has the same model.

Figured I would ask here just to make sure and instead of making a new thread:

I've been wearing a pair of 5.0 CLs for about 14 months and they are beat to hell and back already, so I'm looking at getting a new pair of skates soon. Depending on how they fit my feet, I'm leaning towards either the Nexus 800s or the one.9s. I've recently started to play goalie as well, and I got a pair of 5.0EE one60 goalie skates on clearance that fit like a dream, much better than my CLs, so that turned my attention to Bauer. Anyway, my question is, is there a huge difference in stiffness between size 5.0 skates and their senior counterparts? I wasn't sure if that was the reason my CLs have fallen apart, but I thought it might be. All my eyelets except two or three have fallen off, leather tearing all around the skates, etc. If Bauer is different in this respect it'd make my decision a lot easier.

Thanks in advance

I may as well answer since I started the three and my son is now into his second pair of senior skates.

He went from the junior sized supremes (one.9s) to Vapor APX. He had no trouble at all with the transition. Now, one mitigating factor is that he skates without doing up the top eyelet. So he had plenty of knee and ankle bend despite how stiff the skate was.

He now has the Makos and love them. Bottom line is that they adapt as they grow.

That's comforting to hear, thanks. I'm roughly 10 years older than your son, so I don't have to worry about my feet growing anymore haha

My son transitioned this year from high quality Easton SMU junior skates to Easton adult EQ50s. The main transition was my wife wondering why skates were now $450! They are stiffer for sure, but he is growing stronger as a skater, and he had no adjustment at all.
