Help a newbie with hockey face shield?

Recommended Posts

Hey all.

I currently own a CCM helmet with the following numbers on the side: Z262.2-M90 B-FM10 Jr Type 1. The HECC Certified sticker on the back says ASTM F 1045-97 SM-15.

First, can anyone explain what these numbers mean?

I picked this helmet up used at a recycle shop for 3 bucks and it's worked well for over a year, but I was interested in replacing the cage with a full face shield.

Does anyone know if this item (http://www.ebay.com/...984.m1423.l2649) would fit my helmet? I asked the seller but she didn't know and I have no clue either.

I would really appreciate any help with this. I've new to hockey and unsure on specifics on most gear.

Thanks!!

Nothing worse than watching something and finding it posted in here. Secret's out. As for your question, I have no idea, I don't recognize the model number, but if you posted a picture, or found an equivelant picture it would probably be pretty easy to tell.

What level of Hockey do you play at? If its competitive at all, you may want to upgrade to a newer helmet. Helmet technology has really improved and it's not a bad investment to spend a few $$$ for a quality bucket to protect your dome. As for face shields, That Cooper seems a little old, the older fishbowls tend to fog up really bad and make it borderline unbearable to play with. I know this from experience, I switched to a black Boulder shield and it works awesome. It has yet to fog up on me and looks a million times better than a traditional fishbowl. Just my suggestion.

Yea that sheild is very old. Likely to be brittle and probably will scratch and fog up faster than new ones.

Yeah, I think you're right.I play at the novice/rec level in a couple women-only leagues. It's definitely competitive in its own right, just not amazingly fast. I started one year ago and have made significant progress, so I upgraded my stick, skates and hockey pants to more modern gear and it has made a world of difference. I probably will upgrade my helmet next, but it was kind of cool to get one that fit me pretty well for 3 bucks!Oh and that mask you linked! I was seriously considering one of those, but then I saw the Cooper (which is cheaper)on ebay and thought maybe I'd want that, but not anymore based on the comments I've read here. I'll probably end up getting one of those Avision Ahead masks.

Not meaning to sound harsh, but these days I wouldn't buy anything cooper other than for nostalgia.

Oh is Cooper stuff just way too outdated? Maybe I'll pass on the shield then. Though, I must say I found some pretty cool Cooper gloves at Play it Again that I really like!

Thanks for the tip, I appreciate the help!

If you like the gloves they'll probably be fine, but I'd pass on that mask. I tried a similar mask for a few games about 20 years ago and it fogged like crazy - I'd look into something newer. I prefer just a cage now if I want full facial protection and would buy a RE-AKT cage if I needed a new one (currently use Itech Titanium), but there are several newer options for a full shield. Here's one thread on full shield options: http://www.modsquadhockey.com/forums/index.php?/topic/46474-clear-full-face-proection/ Here's a thread on the Boulder mask: http://www.modsquadh...shield-company/

Yeah I grabbed the gloves and I like them a lot. I'll skip on the mask though. I'm seriously considering that Boulder mask, it just seems pretty expensive. Thank you for those links.

Cooper got bought out by Bauer a long time ago. Anything labelled Cooper is likely 20ish plus years old. That's a long time for plastic in protective equipment to age.

The Boulder mask may be pricier but its amazing. Can't say enough nice things about it, I can't stand a cage and never wanted to be seen in a fishbowl again. The black style makes it look less fishbowley and more cage/visor combo. NEVER fogs up, seriously i tried to MAKE it fog up and couldn't.
