Playing hockey in gym shorts

Recommended Posts

I'm considering playing hockey wearing gym shorts (with jock of course, gotta protect the boys) or some sort of padded compression short with gym shorts over top instead of hockey pants. I'm a great skater in a no-check beer league. I don't find myself blocking shots and already don't wear shoulder pads. One of my teamates plays in gym shorts instead of hockey pants and I've wanted to give it a shot. Anyone else not wear hockey pants?

Won't do that for anything in the world.. Not for shot blocking but just for occasional fall and bumps on the boards (not caused by checking but maybe by trying to recover a puck).

Plus hockey pants are really light now, I bought a pair of One 55 and I barely feel them on!

I see your point there, but I don't find myself on the ice in those scrums. Maybe I should do it for pickup games and see how it goes. Theres a lot of good 5 pad compression shorts out there I think could give me a little protection for what little bumping and falling I do. Like Nike Pro Combat Hyperstrong or that Shock Doctor jock that has pads. I also have a little padding myself at 5'11" 200 pounds. I'd like to hear if anyone has any experience playing without hockey pants or with a 5 pad short before I sink money into it.

All it takes is one slash or unexpected hit to cause serious damage. Padded compression shorts do not have the level of protection needed for ice hockey.
