The recreational/beer league I play in is governed by the IIHF and you must be over 18 to wear a half visor, and born before something like 1975 to wear no half-visor or cage.

These rules were absolute as far as I was aware, but maybe there is some sort of dispensation for experience? i.e. playing in a Euro top leauge.
