Performance Lite Runners... dulls quickly?

Recommended Posts

Hey Guys,

So far still in the honeymoon period with my 14k's. However, are the performance lite runners prone to getting dull quickly? I weight 200lbs and am not a strong skater, I skate 4 hours a week, 2, two hour sessions on a 5/8" hollow. After my first 2 hour session I get slip outs when taking off unless I really lean into it. I dont walk around in my skates, other than the 30ft walk on rubber to the ice. I play on hard ice, but that hasnt been a problem in the past.

I ordered some Rocket Runners to test out since they are super cheap. Any advice or wisdom is appreciated... I just think somethings up since I am resharpening ever 4 hours.

Thanks

If you werent using Reebok's before, They have thinner steel than most other brands. The thinner steel = less deep a hollow. Try going to a 9-16 or 1/2 and see if that makes a bigger difference.

So the width of CCM & Reebok skates is thinner than Bauer? Does this effect edge wear?

No. The steel itself is thinner (width wise) than bauer steel. Since it is thinner the hollow isn't as deep as you are used to. Try a deeper hollow or switching to step steel.

Not true anymore. RBK's are 2.9mm wide just like all the others. In the old days CCMs and RBKs could be 2.7 or 2.8, but not anymore. Same as with bauers, they could be 3.0 or 3.1. But now, all are approx 2.9mm.

If steel is not holding edges, it's likely the steel was overheated by a sharpener, which changes the tempuring. This overheating will cause steel to loose edge quickly.

I did notice some browning on the toe and heel of the blade... The sharpener must have really laid into it...

I am so sick of bad sharpeners. I am sending my new runners to "no icing" sharpeners online. If they cant get it right I will buy my own machine and start doing it myself.

Did not know. Also my bad to assume the sharpening was good.

I will say that when I first bought them, the sales guy sharpened my skates on a blackstone machine and seemed to know what he was doing. First time on the ice they felt great... But the next day after 2 hours of play they felt less grabby. I took them to another place and asked shop guy why he thought my skates dulled after 2 hours he thought that the last sharpener made them to sharp and the edges rolled.

Well I was sceptical, but I had just drove 1 hour to get there so I figured let him sharpen them. Then I noticed he had burned the edge on the front and heel. He also sprayed what smelled like WD40 on them for the final pass. Needless to say I new it was a shit job and I would be in for it for my next session.

I just received my Rocket Runners today and will send them over to no icing by mail. I am also going to go from 5/8ths to 9/16ths... If these dont last three sessions I dont know what I am going to do.

Rockets will hold edges very long time. IMO, best quality regular steel on the market.
