rys 0 Report post Posted April 24, 2013 So haven't played any Ice in 4 years (kept it up playing pickup roller, nothing competitive) but next month will be moving closer to a rink so hoping to get back on the ice. Anybody got any tips for getting back in the game, regarding general skating and stick handling as I find they'll be the main things I need to adapt to quickly. Already working on my fitness to adjust to the pace of the game and increase in rink size. But just looking for general advice for someone who's been off the ice for a while. team50 20 Report post Posted April 24, 2013 Make sure the rink has a heart defibulator. Don't know your age, general fitness level or level of hockey. If its a high level and you're older, take it easy.

I'm 26 and played UK university level before I stopped, then played a season of roller hockey in the North West. Moving down to Cardiff so hoping to join one of the rec teams around. jazzyjoey 2 Report post Posted April 24, 2013 I started playing again 18 months ago after a 6 year hiatus. Everything comes back surprisingly quick. My core muscles got a little sore the day after an open hockey and my feet hurt a bit, but it was mainly because of poorly fit new skates. I would recommend that you get a quality sharpening on your skates and make sure that you feel out all of your edges before you bump up the speed/intensity. It's like riding a bike. OpenIceHit42 2 Report post Posted April 25, 2013 I took about 6 years off from ice after I graduated high school and just got back into it a couple of years ago. Was playing roller a few times a week but just lost general interest in ice. It was almost like riding a bike getting back into it, the biggest thing was just getting comfortable on my edges again. I play both now but my roller game has game in the tank, I can't stop and don't feel as comfortable playing inline as I do ice.
gxc999 7 Report post Posted April 27, 2013 Work out for a while first, then get back on the ice. Don't think the ice time is your workout.
HotBacon 0 Report post Posted October 4, 2013 I took 5 full years off after graduating college, and didn't touch a stick or skates once in that time. When I went back it was like riding a bike...very few issues. Don't expect to have your full abilities that you did prior to the layoff, but you won't be stumbling around like Bambi on the ice. Give yourself a handful of practices/games until you start getting frustrated though...unless you're on the ice and practicing hard (with a coach) like back in the day, the skills won't ever be what they used to be. rys 0 Report post Posted October 4, 2013 Hi its been a few weeks, back in training now its going quite well. The most frustrating thing so far is stick handling, not being able to do things I used to take for granted. Always feel like I'm chasing the puck rather than being in control. Think its just a case of getting used to the speed of the puck on the ice compared to roller. As for fitness I've started training off the ice, going for runs, few sprints intervals and speed training, but its early days yet. First preseason match is the end of this month, so we'll see how that goes. Its such a good feeling being back on the ice though, I've missed it.
