Finally got ice skates

Recommended Posts

I finally got some ice hockey skates (cheap bauer 100's) and went to my (not-so) local rink last tuesday. Not having ice skated much before (I think this was my 3rd or 4th time), I found it to be quite different than skating with roller hockey skates. My body positioning and balance seemed to be shifted back more. It took me almost 20 minutes to get comfortable to do cross-overs.

My feet and skates felt unstable as they wobbled quite a bit. I didn't have them sharpened at the time because there was no one in the pro shop. (I have had them sharpened since) Will sharpening them make a big difference?

I can feel the difference on the weight and lean on the edges, which I am not super comfortable with yet. Any of you guys that went from roller to ice skates have any suggestions or tips for me on how to help the transition?

Thanks....it was tons of fun!

Sharpening will make a HUGE difference. Your blades will now be able to "dig in" to the ice. You'll be able to push off a lot better on each stride, turn much sharper and easier, you'll lose most of that wobbly feeling...

If your in-line skates had a lot of ankle support then switching to the Bauer 100's will feel much different. Sharpening will make the most difference though. It's amazing you were able to stand up on the ice at all.

Try the rocker chassis when youre skating inline. I went from the rocker chassis in inline and then ice, and it really did make things alot easier to transition. Just a thought, rocker chassis' are great for someone who plays both ice and inline.
