How soon to change the laces?

Recommended Posts

Just picked up a new pair of skates (Bauer Vapor x7.0), had them baked at the LHS. I know you're not supposed to skate in them right away but I got a pair of different laces than the factory issued and wanted to put them in. Is it ok to do this after a couple of hours or should I just wait until tomorrow?

Changing the laces after a few hours shouldn't be a problem -- just don't crank on them if the skate is still warm and the thermoplastics are still soft.

What would be better, ideally, is that you lace the skate up tomorrow with your foot in your usual skating sock to help dial in the lacing pattern to ensure the best fit on your first skate.

Enjoy the new wheels.

Thanks for the reply!

Yeah I wasn't planning on tightening them in the boot, just looping them through. The boot's pretty much cooled off, it's about 5 hours since they were baked. I know I can't skate with them either way but it's a new toy and I just want to be able to do something with 'em.

I did the same thing, changed the laces right away and it was fine. I put wax laces in but had to get them rebaked a week later. The kid tying them after the baking got his hands covered in the wax. It was pretty funny actually. Keep this in mind if you use wax laces and want them rebaked.
