Outside Ankle Pain CCM U+12's

Recommended Posts

I've owned these skates (U+12's) for over a year and about 2 months ago I started getting pain. I'm getting a sharp pain in my right outside ankle bone when I tighten the skate. To describe It feels like a bruise when pressure is applied on the bone that sticks out. I've had them punched out twice and baked again to no avail. The skate seems to reform itself after getting punched out. I've tried wearing thicker socks which helps a little. I bought bunga pad discs but they just caused more pressure. Last night I had to wear my right skate loose just to skate. I have really skinny ankles so my skates can't be loose or they will wobble. I tie my skates to the top eyelet and haven't tried dropping down one yet. Do I need to be looking at new skates? Any advise would help, thanks

I would rest it first of all. but you could try spot heating the area once more after some time and flex your ankle such that when heated, the foams can form to the shape of your ankle when bent rather than when straight.

I had a similar issue when breaking in my skates. I figured out it was due to a stiff portion of the tongue where the leather was double-layered over the felt. The small amount of movement of the tongue was bruising the soft area above my ankle. I spent about an hour rolling the tongue to loosen up the materials and they've been great ever since.

You could also try EzeeFit ankle booties, which helped me get through the rest of my skate break-in period. http://www.icewarehouse.com/descpage.html?pcode=EZUT

I've never used bunga pads but have made my own pads for this kind of problem. If you can get some 2mm neoprene and cut it into a donut shape to surround the ankle bone. Then experiment with different layers and sizes of donuts, sometimes a 1/2 donut taped above or below the ankle will do just as well. It's a matter of getting the pressure from the boot off the ankle bone and onto the surrounding area. This will allow the ankle to heal and let you keep skating. After a while you can try to skate again without any donuts. I also use 2mm ezeefit booties over the top as it helps to hold the donuts in place. Having to tape up your feet everytime is a real pita and causes much mirth in the changing room but if it keeps me on the rink I don't care.

Update:

I was told not to keep my skates in my car in the summer. I had them re-baked and after my games they go in the house. I've yet to have this problem again. The idea was the skate boot was reforming from the heat during the summer.

I had an issue with my CCM u+12.

There is too much felt coming out from under the armour tongue, and it causes pain on the sides of my feet, but with a trim they are fitting perfectly.
