It's the best thing for him and the organization. He most likely wasn't going to be GM (that's going to Gorton when Sather decides he's wasted enough of MSG's money) and the Rangers typically go for name brand coaches with at least some head coaching experience. As a Rangers fan I'm glad they resisted the urge to give him the job simply because of what he did for them in the 90s as a player. The Oilers have pretty much proven that rewarding their past stars with management and coaching positions doesn't exactly translate to success.
