Need help with jr hockey skates

Recommended Posts

I need help finding the right hockey skates for my son who is 10. He's been in Bauer Vapor since he was 4 until this year. I bought him a pair of Vapor X3 jr size 1.5 D but he's been complaining of arch pain on the right foot. I took him to the pro shop to have it heated & molded but it still hurts him. He's in a travel team so he will be in his skates 3-5 hrs a week starting in August. We'll be heading to Toronto for July 4 holiday weekend and was wondering where I should bring him to get fitted and buy skates in Toronto? Should I still stick to Bauer Vapor or move him up to Graf which is significantly more $$ ? Also, since we're 3 hrs drive away from Toronto and what happened if this new skates hurt him once we go back to skating and we're quite a distance away? Should I be better off buying it near where I live? Where I live they don't carry Graf. Any help would be appreciated.

Would like to know how this panned out on the trip.

Mine cant wear vapors because of arch pain. He has worn Graf for past 2 years, but currently in size 1 Reebok 18ks we got lightly used of Ebay. While waiting for new Graf models to be released. May want to try on reeboks.

We ended up with a Vapor in EE. Tried Supreme, Nexus and Reebok. What was happening was that the skate was too narrow, putting stress on the midfoot and thus, had the arch in an unnatural position. Less than optimal heel lock existed for all of the skates we tried, but was fixed after a bake in the Vapors, which allowed his foot to sink into the padding. Since arch pain is something that sometimes shows up later on when skating, I recommended to them to consider Superfeet Yellow or other insoles if that happens.

I moved my daughter from Bauer to Easton due to similar foot pain issues. She is on her third Easton skate and would never go back. All of the skates at certain price points are nice skates (especially for kids), it really comes down to comfort. If a certain brand fits the player's foot well, then that brand is often times the brand the skater wants to stick with. We went from X:20 Vapors to Easton SE16, then S17 and now RS.. and the Eastons all have had a similar fit on her foot. She is 12 now. Hope that helps.
