Inline beginner.

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

Im looking to start playing some inline hockey before too long(been saying that for too long) but am kind of lost of where to start. I played street hockey as a kid, but never in a league or with a really structured team. Im 32 now. I can skate, and handle a stick, but not sure if Im "hockey ready", if that makes sense. I found some complete itroduction classes, and have thought bout attending those, and am thinking about going to a pick-up session, but Ive read various forum posts about some pick-ups being way competitive and overly aggressive. not really what im looking for in my first "real" hockey experience. So, Im on here asking for any and all advice I can get. Should I skip the PU and go straight for a beginner league? Should I sign up for the introduction classes? Anyone on here go to Corona Rinks that maybe wants to teach an old guy how to play hockey on a rink? Thanks in advance, Tim.

Dude, I am 31 and posted the same thread about 8 months ago. Never too late. For starters you will get tons of good advice from the regs here; from equipment to game. Here is what I can tell you based on what the guys shared with me when I was in your shoes and somethings I picked up on my own. 1) Stop thinking and just skate 2) Play in Pick Up games, on a League, on your block, and where ever and when ever.. 3) there really is no aggression that you will not be able to handle.. I have gotten into a few scruffs here and there.. trust me it is not like guys are out there to get violent. It is like making new friends, you say hello, make a few buddies, and at he end of the day everyone is out for a good time. Sure there is a jerk every now and then.. like one guy kept slashing at me a few weeks ago. I asked him to stop once, twice, then I checked his ass and we went at it.. again its a matter of choice you might have just ignored it. Btw.. him and I went for beers after - it is hockey were not here to make enemies. .. So I suggest finding the arena near you, call them, find out when PU is go there lace up and have some fun. you can tell the guys you are a newbie, usually everyone has a good sense of humour and more than willing to help out.

You don't need classes.. just go play man. Any questions feel free.

just keep the feet moving, there is more space and the other team has more speed than you think they do, always at least when youre starting. watch some of the Olympic games mens or womens doesnt matter. see where each position is in all the situations. if youre just starting itll most likely be on wing, remember to back check and cover the points on D, offense is your job but defense is just as much so.

also i think there was just a thread made for adult classes and clinics, i think most of the p[laces were in CA as well.
