Bauer Vapor x60 (the new model) heat molding

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

Just received a new Bauer Vapor x60 (2013 model) in D width. My question is, what "thermoforbed x-rib patern" means? They can be baked, or will naturally get molded around the foot?

And also is there any way to heat the akle paddings inside to get them loosen around the ankle bones area, as there seem to be the only point of a little bit discomfort?

Skates still not put in the ice.

Thanks

  • Quarter Package: Sublimated silver tech nylon with thermoformed X-rib

    • Thermoformable - Material will mold to the players foot for a precise fit

  • The X-ribbed design (seen from looking at the back of the boot) was designed to enhance the performance of the patented Vapor monostructure quarter for unparalleled response and dynamic movement. Developed to enhance key support zones throughout the ankle and foot delivering quicker acceleration and greater stability.

These skates are not supposed to be baked. You can do it and it likely won't hurt anything, but it won't help. The ankle padding will soften up with time. The "thermoformed" here is about the manufacturing process Bauer uses in the quarter panel, not the bakeability of the boot.

Just skate on them as much as you can.

What if I put something inside the skates to stretch the ankle bones area and leave it for some time? Just to makethem wider.

Will it help in this case?

Go back to where you got them and tell them where you're getting pressure. Its likely they can punch out the skate in that area to help.

But skate on them a few times at least first to give them a chance to break in before you have them punch and alter the boot. But a good shop should be able to do that fairly easy.

Thanks for the suggestions.

How is the fit of the high end models like x6.0 compared to those x60s especially in the ankle area? More loose or tight or similar? On pictures seems x6.0 has deeper (wider) ankle area.

Fit is generally the same, but feel will be different because the 6.0 is much stiffer than the X60, as well as being much more heat mouldable. It's not necessarily wider anywhere or narrower, but will be able to form better than the X60 will. For example, if you have really skinny ankles, the X60 will wrap around as tight as you can lace them, but after moulding a 6.0, it would be able to form a more permanent wrap closer to the ankle. However, the tradeoff is that it's a very stiff skate. If you're not a reasonably skilled skater used to higher end skates, it might hamper some aspects of mobility.
