Help me match the pitch on my new conversions

Recommended Posts

I switched to mako skates for ice, leaving me with Vapors to convert to rollerblades. Ive already bought a sprung chassis, and will be doing the conversion in the next week or so.

Switching to the aggressive pitch of the mako is taking some time to adjust, but I think once I do it will be good for me. I would like the pitch of my rollerblades to match the pitch of my ice skates as closely as possible. I took some pictures (below) of the sprung chassis in front of both skates to compare the pitch of both. What it looks like is that for the sprungs to match the pitch of the mako, im gonna need a shim or something.

Anyone have any experience doing this with rollerblades? From what it looks like, even across the same like of skates - the pitch on roller blades is usually less than ice skates - so is there a reason for this?

When I was asking the sprungs guy about this, and this is what he said:

It's hard to match the pitch of ice blades with a roller chassis, even Sprungs which have the most aggressive pitch in the biz. The ice blades are lower, and your pitch is within the lower front design of the holder. Roller chassis being taller puts your raised heel way up there. Sprungs generally match right up to the boot sole curves without having to bend the boot bottom to match the rear mount. Also, the suspension increases the pitch as your weight shifts forward on your foot. More than the curve of the ice blade.

So obviously he knows more about this than I do, but I still think that Im gonna need at least a small shim to match the pitch of the mako.

Here are the pics I took, so let me know what you think:

and keep in mind im trying to make the transition from ice to roller as easy as possible, so I guess that takes precedent over anything else.

As a last resort, I could always put the tuuk on the makos, and then it would make it a little easier to match. But im pretty sure I will eventually prefer the pitch of the mako over the vapor, so I'd rather not do that.

On a side note, does anyone know the actual pitch rating of these skates? It would help to find out how much I would have to add to the vapor to get it to match the mako.

thanks!

ok so bumping since I have my sprungs mounted, so I can have a better idea of how much pitch I should add. Here is a pic with sprungs on (not all screws in yet).

So I measured the height from the toe to ground, and heel to ground on all skates to see if I could determine pitch that way. This is what I got:

Easton Mako difference between heel and toe is 26mm

Bauer Vapor with tuuk difference is 19mm

and the Vapors with Sprungs the difference is 13.5mm

So from the looks of those measurements, I need to add a little over a whole centimeter to get the pitch right. Anyone else have experience doing this? Lemme know what you think.
