Elbow pad help: RBZ vs Nexus 8000

Recommended Posts

I'm currently in AX1's and I think they are amazing pads, however the forearm protection runs a little long and keeps hitting the cuff of my gloves. I bought APX2's and hated them after just wearing them around the house. Now I've bought a pair of RBZs which feel so much better than the APX's but unfortunately there seems to be a big gap in protection in the bicep area. I'm still considering keeping them but I know after taking a slash in the vulnerable area I'll regret my decision. I'm in CL shoulders but they are the earlier models which don't have the adjustable caps. The AX1's on the other hand were a beast when it came to protection and on par, if not better than my RBK 7K PROs! So my question is: Is the gap too big to ignore in the RBZs? Is anyone currently wearing Nexus 8000 elbows and thoughts on it?

I don't really think that gap matter at all, almost every elbow pad I've had hasn't really covered there. I've never once in my entire life been hit there so I wouldn't really worry about it.

I have RBZ shoulders and elbow pads. A couple of weeks ago I was knocked over in front of my own net and while in the process of getting back up I was drilled with a slapshot directly on my bicep in that gap. I don't know if I've ever been hit there before and just never noticed because it hit padding but this one certainly hit me clean.

I will say that it stung and left a huge bruise but I don't regret the purchase. Chances are I won't get hit there again and even at that, it likely wouldn't result in an injury. If you had a gap over a bone like a rib I would worry but over a muscle isn't too big of a deal.

That area does matter, prime location to get cross checked or some sort of stick work. It's not always up to the elbow pad to cover the bicep area, it's a combination of the elbow and shoulder pads. There are guys in the show who leave that area solely up to the shoulders to protect:

Here are the AX1's which protect that area great, however the forearm/slash guard runs a little long and interferes with my glove.

Here are some Nexus 8000s in small which also don't work, so now I'm leaning towards the Mediums. It's either this or getting the RBZ shouldies.

Have you considered shortening your elbow pads? I think that would be ideal, or at least the route I would go if everything else fit perfectly :]
