Need Advice on new skates

Recommended Posts

So yesterday I was able to purchase a pair of Easton Mako Sr skates (not the Mako II), for $299.99 (retailed for $959.99). I'm coming from an old pair of Easton Synergy's that are roughly 14 years old that I bought when I started varsity back in 9th grade. So any new skate is really going to be a nice upgrade.

My question is though, what's the better deal? The Mako Sr at $299.99 or the newer Bauer Supreme 170 Sr for $299.99?

I play in an adult league once a night each week along with sticks & pucks and the occasional drop in.

I know that people praise Bauer skates; but is it worth it to send the Mako's back and get the 170s?

Thanks everyone!

The skates that fit your foot best are the best deal. If both models fit equally well I'd say the Mako is the better buy as it responds more to heat and has harder steel. If the Makos don't fit you well after baking, but the Supremes fit perfectly then obviously that's the better option. From a spec perspective the Makos are better - you're comparing mid-range Bauers to the top of the line Easton skate.

If the Makos fit you well I'd definitely stick with them. I'd take Makos over TotalOnes as the Makos fit my feet better than Supremes.

Thanks for your input, I was thinking the same thing but didn't know too much about the Makos; and wasn't sure if it was fair to compare the Mako's from a year and half ago to a newer mid range Supreme.

I get the Makos today so we'll see how they fit.

Thanks again.

No problem. Remember that the Makos are designed to be baked (ideally at a store with a skate oven, but at home in a convection oven preheated to 200 and placed on a cookie/pizza sheet with a wet towel on it for 10 minutes should work in a pinch). If they turn out to be far too big or something a bake won't fix that, but if they're the right length and just feel a bit tight with a few hot spots then a bake can definitely make a difference.
