Cagone - uneven edges

Recommended Posts

I've been sharpening on a manual machine for 10 years, 2 years ago I bought a ProSharp machine, its  basically been flawless to operate delivering a good quality, balanced edge time after time. Last year  I needed another machine and decided on the Cagone as it offers FBV. Since it arrived we have basically been unable to get it to sharpen a single a pair of skates as it seems to be impossible to balance one skate that would have it centered for the second skate. RIght now it is simply taking up bench space. The boys at Cagone have been unable to provide any useful support so I am looking for comments from anyone in the Modsquad family with experience and or insight into the Cagone.

To clarify further, put a skate in run it through the preset P1 which is 4 cycles (8 times up and back over the stone) this should be finished but edges aren't even, open the machine adjust the spindle any where from 1/2 to 1/8 of a turn and run the skate on P2  (1 cycles = 2 times up and back over the stone) once or twice and MAYBE it works, maybe/probably need to open and adjust the spindle again and again P2 once or twice or even thrice. Then say its even.

Put in the second skate - at which point you'd think the machine is now centered, run a P1 on this new skate, its way off again, repeat the whole process.

Sharpening a pair of skates take twice as long as a manual machine with a lot more frustration.

The machine appears to defy the law of physics. Its new.

Can anyone help?

p.s. I'm in China so it isn't easy to just send it back.

Further, below is a record I made when sharpening a pair of skates.

Note:

Skate Orientation Normal is heel left in the carriage.

Differential is the notches on the Bat Gauge away form balanced.

Adjustment Direction is the direction the spindle for the spinner was adjusted.

Spindle Adjustment is how much of a turn the spindle was adjusted.

There is nothing wrong with the machine. I have been using CAGS for more that 20 yrs. The problem is with your adjustment.  If you don't have a self centering holder, the alignment will be off from skate to skate using the FBV.  How does it work with hollows?  PM me for more in depth discussion.
