Are the Bauer Nexus skates for normal feet?

Recommended Posts

I am researching the Bauer Nexus 7000s and I keep reading that they are for guys with big feet and some people commented that if you have normal feet you will "swim" in these models.

I am basically done with competitive hockey now and just need a new pair of skates to teach my kids. I am currently using my old Synergy 1300c models and they are killing my feet. I used to love these skates, but if I skate for more than an hour, I can barely walk anymore. So I need to find a new pair that won't break the bank.

The shops around me don't have any of the Nexus 7000s left in my size, so I may have to order some online and see how they fit.

When I played competitively I used to wear the Bauer 4000s and the Megas 10-90s.

When they say the Nexus are a classic fit, do they mean they fit like those old school models like that?

Nexus is a wider fit all around, it is also deeper instep and a large toebox. I doubt any one will find Nexus skate too tight unless you have hobbit feet.  That said, you can find that Nexus is too wide and offers no heel lock and allow for your foot to roll inside a little which all translates to a discomfort. Bauer Supreme models are usually is where you'd start. If you find that it is too tight or you do not pass the pencil test, then you would go to Nexus. If Supremes feel roomy, you can try Vapor. As far as 7000 or 6000 or whatever, all Nexus are nominally fit very similarly. So if 6000 fits good, there is a good chance that 7000 will do as well. If you are stuck on getting the skates from online, you will have to bite a bullet and order something and if it does not fit right, send them back and exchange for a different model. In many cases, the shipping to you from the retailer is free, but you will need to pay for the return shipping. You can find out where you would need to send the skates to and estimate the shipping so you know what you are in to. It could be $14 or it could be $60 or even more. You box will be around 22x15x6 and weight is usually 6Lb to 9Lb (UPS bill for 12Lb anyway so it does not really matter). Buying skates on line is a hit or miss. You can get lucky and get the first pair that is great, or you can end up sending 3 or 4 pairs back before something properly fits and in that you will exhaust lots of time and all the discount that you get comparing to LHS. So LHS (if they know what they are doing) is a safer bet, they will bake and sharpen the skates for you. So you might end up paying half as much, but you will get your skates today and you get them properly fitted.

Thx for the reply KG.

I never had any skates baked before. I went from the old school models to the Synergys and never had those baked either.

If the Nexus felt loose, would baking help from making the heel slip? I know it won't make them wider, but does it help make them a little tighter?

No, baking neither makes them wider nor tighter, Baking is just make them to contour your foot shape closer. With regular skates such as Bauer makes, the baking is not really necessary. If the skate does not fit right, baking will not help. Baking is a must only on the  skates that are built like Easton Mako model. I think the only other skates are VH and perhaps CCM Super Tacks to some degree. The rest are basically, if they do not fit right, it would take lots of effort to make them work. Also not all skates can benefit from baking, some are not even intended for that. Easton Synergy fit is considered by some to be similar to Bauer Supreme line. If the Synergy fit good, you might want to give Bauer Supreme a shot. If synergy is tighter than you want it, then perhaps you can look at Nexus and maybe CCM Tacks.

Ya I love my Synergies 8.5 D (how close I feel to the ice with them), but they keep killing my feet and since I have had them for ten years and skate a ton, I dont think they are getting anymore broken in.

I am a 10.5 shoe size, and have always used a 8.5 D skate. I went to the 9s with the Synergy 1300c just to see, and they felt clunky as hell, so I just gave them to my uncle.

My best fit ever was the old Bauer 5000s back around the mid 90s that had 8.75. I seem to fit best between 8.5-9, but squeeze into the 8.5s because 9s in every brand Ive ever used (Graf, Flites, Bauer, Easton) always feel off and clunky.

Im hoping the extra room in the Nexus will allow me to wear the 8.5 without pain, while not giving me that clunky feel with the 9s.
