FLeury banned from senior hockey

Recommended Posts

Hey all.......new to the site.......and loving it! I am back into hockey after (quite) a few years off for rugby, work, kids, etc. The boy is 6 and getting into hockey big time, and lo and behold I find myself on a team again and as excited about everything as he is.

I thought I would share some news from my neck of the woods, northern Alberta. A local native hockey team is making a run for the Canadian senior men's championship this year. They have had Gino Odjick and 3 other ex-pro's (Greg & Sasha Lakovic, Dody Wood) playing all year. Gino works with their year-round hockey school too.....looks/sounds like a great guy!

The other day, after being approached a while ago, Theoren Fleury decided he would like to play out the season for a chance to win the Allen Cup.

A problem occured however that Hockey Alberta has a rule that anyone who was under an NHL contract last year is ineligible to be carded for senior hockey this year. The rule is new, allegedly influenced by the NHL, and was apparently put into place to keep Ryan Smyth from playing senior with his two brothers in Bentley AB.

The local club, the Horse Lake Thunder, is appealing on the grounds that Fleury's suspension in 2003 essentially terminated his contract. One for the lawyers perhaps.

There has been lots of excitement up here as a result of the Fleury announcement, and it is good for amateur hockey. I am enjoying the popularity senior hockey has gained back as a result of the lockout. Grassroots hockey is drawing great crowds....it is good to see. I was at a novice game a week ago and there were over 100 people in the stands watching these 6/7 year olds.

What does everyone think about Fleury not being allowed?

i can understand Ryan Smyth not being allowed to play, but they should let Fleury, its doubtful hell ever play in the nhl again, and liek you said, his suspension basically ended his contract. I love Theo, hes been my fav player since i was a kid, ive met him a couple of different times and hes a great guy

The suspension could have been served and he could be back in the NHL. His refusal to attend a sanctioned rehab clinic is a choice he has to live with. If that choice also means he can't play in this league(this year), so be it.

Gino is a class act, despite what he was in the nhl for. He stayed with my uncle while he played on the islanders, and thanked my uncle on tv when he was traded. Gino is also a chief of an indian reservation. The curve he had on his old sticks is amazing. Im getting customs done of it, just flipped into a righty.
