professional OPS repairs

Recommended Posts

Did anyone catch Sportsnet's clip on repairing OPS's ? I caught a glimpse of it while I was channel hoping.

There are some professional stores that can fix broken OPS's (shafts and blades). I think they were using some type of technology to re-bond the graphite material.

I believe they say it costs on average $60 CDN to repair the break and there is a 1 month warranty. The owner said that out of 50 hockey sticks only 2 came back.

To prove a point Sportsnet took a repaired Synergy Grip (broken blade) and let Marcus Naslund test it out (slap shots and puck handling) and he said he didn't notice any difference in feel at all from a new one. Naslund said the blade was stiff and thought the concept was good for people who don't get the stuff for free.

I forgot the name of the company.

Yes, it comes back heavier. Not a large amount, but it is heavier. It is more durable, I believe the performance is the same (as long as its not repaired on the kickpoint), the blade will be thicker. $60 is a little much IMO, for a little more why not make it into a tapered shaft at that price? I'd pay $30 tops, and yes it does work, but you have to stay away from repaired blades or kickpoints if your looking to repair a stick.

they did say quite a lot of work/time was put into the repair.

$60 CDN is a bit of dough but some of my friends have favourite pro stock OPS's that they are really happy with (balanced and nice curves) so they might want to save it.

The stick will not be balanced after the work they did on it.

I don't know...... If you shatter or snap a shaft that lasted you past the warranty period, just let it go and get another. It just seems like a waste for that kind of money.

I looked into being one of the stik fix franchises, it was a good concept except their franchise set up was costly and the way they offered territory sucked.

Basically they repair carbon using the same repair techniques as the aircraft industry to repair aircraft wing and fusalage damage. It's a proven method. Any weight difference I think would not even be noticable. Wearing a blindfold, I'd bet you couldn't even tell.

My buddy is the goalie coach for a CCHA team (and also plays on my beer league team) and they have started experimenting with fixing broken OPSs for the guys who skate out. They give him sticks to punish to see if they hold up after the repair. The last one he brought to our game was a Vapor XX. Not only could you not really feel a difference in the balance, you had to look VERY hard to see where it was repaired. As of right now they are doing shafts only, but so far so good.
