Slapshot Technique Suggestions

Recommended Posts

I hope no one gets bored with these topics, but you guys have given great advice on this board and so I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask for your guy's suggestions, opinions, etc.

I recently bought an R2 XN10 Reg flex shaft. I have a modo synthesis blade on it. I'm coming from an inno 260 flex w/ a modo. My shots with the inno were really good, not pro/junior A level, but hard, crisp shots. I've been using my xn10 now for two weeks and I can't seem to get anything consistant or close to what I had been shooting.

Specifically, when i attempt to get a quick release slapshot off, either the puck seems to knuckle, or comes of the blade on its its side....kind of on axis from left to right. The power that should be going to the puck is getting lost somewhere. If I shoot slowly and put a lot less effort into the shot, I can get crisper shots that stay flat, however there's much less velocity on it. In a game you don't get that much time to just try to take an easy, slower shot with out it getting blocked and if i'm skating at full speed it really throws me off to be skating fast, and then attempting to take this slow swing. What furhther baffles me is that when i take a snap or slapshot on my off-shooting foot, I get a great shot....the puck is never knuckling or coming of the blade on an angle....which makes me think Its a form/shooting technique thing. I've tried snapping my wrists and rolling over my wrists over more than I always have when I shoot, but that seems to put the puck into the netting and doesn't really help my velocity probelm.

Like is said, the strangest thing is that shots of my off-shooting foot are great....and if I could shoot on my normal foot, this shaft would be fine....i'm assuming shots of my normal shooting foot will be better than anything coming of my off-shooting foot.

I guess basically if someone has had this problem or new of someone that has had a problem with puck not flattening out and kind of leaning on its side when it comes off the blade, I would greatly appreciate some advice, suggestions or opinions. Sorry for the stupid question.....just really would like some help.

are both your sticks the same length? also, it could be the different flexs. i can shoot well with my 260 alpha nemesis, but when i tried a friends whip response, i just couldn't connect iwth the puck properly, exactly the same way you described it. it felt really awkward when i was trying to load up the shaft for a slapshot. it might just be that you have to really work on hitting the ice with your blade completely flat, and focus on each part of your shot, instead of doing it the way you're used to

The R2XN10 also a different shaft shape from your previous shaft, might take a few more uses till you get used to holding it.

Sounds to me almost like a problem with too steep a lie.....did you check that the new blade has the same lie as the old one?...When you shoot from your off foot...you tend to hold the stick a bit steeper, which might explain why you have a better shot using this technique. ...If you have too steep a lie, it can create exactly what you are seeing....The puck will start to lose contact with the blade before it has reached the correct acceleration....rolling across the blade with half the puck falling below the edge of the blade as you finish the shot.
