To be fair, I heard he had a great influence on Marcus Naslund in his VAN stint. That might be embellished though.

I heard the same thing basically. Don't get me wrong, I don't think Mark Messier is a bad player or person at all but he just wasn't a good fit in Vancouver. Mike Keenan is known for his frequent trade habits and conflicts with younger players. But I do agree Naslund wouldn't be where he was today without playing with Mark for 3 years in Vancouver.

but a lot of Nazzy's success also has to do with Iron Mike Keenan being here, and not having Bure or Mogilny (who was injury prone). as much as Naslund dislikes Keenan, he admits that Iron Mike told him to stop worrying so much and just go out there and do his thing, (obviously not as nicely as that i would imagine) but having Messier to set him up was a plus. it was like a necessary evil i say, those dark times....

IIRC, at one point in the 97-98 (or was it 98-99) season, there was an article on naslund in the sun, who said he'd like to be traded if he didn't get more icetime.

Actually Mike Keenan was pretty close to trading Markus Naslund to the Ottawa Senators one year near the trade deadline for draft picks. I heard the owner stepped in and prevented Naslund from becoming a Sen.
