Mouthguards: What do you use?

Recommended Posts

I don't think so, but if they mold it right spitting it out won't be a problem because you have to literally pull it off your teeth. I have one and so does my niece (she also plays lacrosse) and neither of us can take them out without using our hands. Also, all her teammates want one because she's the only one you can understand what she's saying with the guard in

Does SISU make a model with a strap on it? Particularly a youth model?  A friend is looking for one for his kid who plays lax and I told him custom was probably overkill at this point but he definitely wants something that the kid won't keep spitting out so the SISU sounded like a good idea.

We do not, and most likely won't in the future.

I would like to step onto a little soap box to explain why. I know a lot of leagues, particularly in football are beginning to demand straps for the mouthguard to prevent kids from losing it. But as our science team was testing impact patterns on strap mouthguards, they cautioned that the strap creates a single point of focus for the impact forces to travel to. It's a locus of force absorption in that single spot. For us, since our guard works as a system and the perforations oscillate on impact to diffuse forces, adding a single point of impact would mess with the whole system.

As cmflynn pointed out, if molded correctly, our guard creates a custom fit so secure, that it willstay in the mouth during the entire game or practice. To remove the guard, the player will physically have to unclip it from their teeth with their hands.  You don't need to take the guard out during the game, because you can talk and drink with it, so there shouldn't be any reason to take it out. So, we've not had issues with guards being lost DURING the game...

Now after the game is another issue, lol. Those gym bags are like a direct portal to the land of lost things and they tend to eat mouthguards, apparently :)  J/K

Having a case is an absolute must. I can't even imagine what else you'd do with your mouthguard.

Yeah, that's kind of why we added one to our product mix. It has a handle so it can be clipped onto the backpack for easy access and such. They've been selling very well, so it was a good idea for sure.

The strap wasn't to keep from spitting it out, it is league rule, as you mentioned above.

I can totally understand the science reasoning behind the decision to go without a strap.  If I remember correctly many years ago some company (it may have been Shock Doctor, but don't quote me on that) had a strap mechanism that was essentially a bungee cord with a ball on the end that fitted into a socket on the guard.  It was set up such that if there was enough force on the strap then the ball would disengage from the socket, thereby preventing the single point of force focus that you mentioned.  Don't remember who had that setup or if it was effective at all.

Yeah man, sorry about that. We are happy to talk with the league about regulations. It has worked for us in some cases when we explain the science and the safety concerns. Please inbox me if I can provide you with any information that may make a difference. Sorry we couldn't help more.
