Probably a preference thing.  Sakic preferred a soft blade, though I think he was more the exception than the rule.

Majority of high level players (NHL/AHL/D1) tend to prefer softer blades. Softer blade allows for more accurate shooting; the puck stays on the blade longer for loading, which increases accuracy, especially helpful on one-timer as well. It also makes it easier to receive hard passes.

Understand though, what works for Player A may not work for Player B.

For example, I got a bundle of pro stock sticks from Mackinnon. Some of them have softer blades, others are very stiff. You can sometimes "feel" how stiff the blade is, which will give you some insight as to the blade construction without having to cut the blade apart. Maybe he uses one stick for PP when he knows he will be taking more shots and the other is for general use. Who knows? He also varies his flex quite a bit as well.

Wasn’t expecting that tight of a wrap, just looking to see if it was possible to get a better wrap than i currently have

You might be able to get a little more wrap, but it technically defeats the design of those skates, since they aren't built to wrap tightly.

Might try to make the trek to the local pure hockey next week and ask to use their oven

That would be a good idea. While you can do it yourself at home, if you damage the skates, then you won't be able to file a warranty claim.

I was actually thinking of buying a lower end true to test the curve and hopefully get better durability than their higher end models. Is the lie actually a 6 or does it feel lower? I’ve read both from other places.

    Its a 5 lie.

I'm leaning towards putting heel lifts on mine. I like the holder, but I feel like I'm not forward enough, especially on starts. My favorite holder and steel spec has been the classic Graf Cobra 11' radius with aggressive pitch. Does anyone have a suggestion on how much of a heel lift I should request to achieve that feel on my Cat7s?

If you want to test the heel lift before making significant modifications, you could buy these:

    https://www.thisissoul.com/products/superfeet-heel-lift

If you want to just do the heel lift, I would start with 1-1.5mm

I've been skating in Trues for the last 3, almost 4 years. Before that I was skating in a few different models of Bauer for about a decade. The Trues make my feet feel more connected to the ice than anything I've ever skated in and made leaning on my outside edges extremely easy. A few months back I picked up a pair of heavily discounted FT6 Pros just because. The first few skates on them were terrible because they felt so sloppy. Tried a few different lacing techniques, rebaked them, and they feel solid now. However, the ankle area is still very wide, requires me to crank on the laces, and still outside edge work is not as smooth as with the Trues.

Now, I'd imagine this is probably more my technique (or lack thereof), but does anyone have any experience, or is it even possible to get CCM boots to wrap more tightly like True boots? I've done the Saran Wrap method, but as you can see in the below photo, the opening is still extremely wide. The True opening isn't even as tight/narrow as my last pair of Trues, yet I can tie them barely snug and not have any problems.

I have grown to really enjoy True skates, but am on my 3rd pair due to cracks so I'm just looking toward the future which is why I am hoping to make these FT6s work. I do not play at a competitive enough level that should require me to replace skates every year.

You will never get a retail CCM or Bauer skates to have the same wrap as TRUE as those brands don't design the retail skate itself to wrap.

If you went with a custom CCM, you could request to have added facing, which would allow the cuff to wrap the way you want.

Is it flatter around heel and mid of the blade? Also is the toe as rockered as the p28? I didn’t mind that curve as much besides the openness

Check out the T27 by TRUE. Similar to the P14 but less rocker. If you can't find any good pics online, I can snap some for you. I recently moved from the P90 to the T27.

I broke a holder on my TF7s. A few questions for the brain trust:

    a) do the Max holders have the same hole pattern as the shift?

    b) I’ve seen a few places say that the Shift steel can go in Max holders, but not the opposite. Is that correct? I’m hoping to avoid buying new steel.

    c) Are there any other holders that line up with the shift hole pattern without having to drill new ones?

    A: Yes

B: Shift steel can work in the standard Shift holder or the Shift Max holder. Shift Max steel cannot be used in the standard Shift holder, as it has a locking tang on the end.

C: No. Every other brand of holder will require drilling.

Curious how much data a retail location has or is provided for stocking.  My assumption is a lot although many companies have data and don’t know how to use it, but this should be pretty trivial.

Our local Pure which serves all or northern Pittsburgh has an interesting stock of sticks.  I would say 60-70% are senior, 70-80% are top line models, essentially no 3rd tiers (like maybe one or two lines might have a handful), 70% righty, and almost nothing other than the obligatory rack of youth Jetspeeds in 40 or lower (so no junior 40 flex which is kind of a sweet spot for 10u to even slight 14u players).  And almost all P92 and P28, which does make sense.

This is just my eye test but when we go in just for fun and my lefty 12u 85 pounder wants to look at sticks, it’s a pretty short endeavor.

Rink pro shops seemed to be better geared toward the youth demographic, which makes sense for them but still, surprising for Pure.  I haven’t been to the one south of the city since they took over a really big private store which used to have about double the stock of everything.

Pure has internal buyers who dictate what's gets ordered for every store. IMO the people who do the ordering are out of touch with trends. I could go off on a tangent on this...

I love this! Bauer clearly put that block in the channel to prevent people from using their old steel. There is no need for a bevel on the blades, there is no bevel on CCM Step steel. It's nice to see people found a workaround so all their old steel won't go to waste.

Supposedly the parabolic design is to help the steel lock in place, preventing it from popping out during impact. However, the changes were to also introduce a new patent as well, since the old patent had expired.

Bauer keeps experimenting with weight reduction on the upper half of the steel, from perforated steel for Custom+ and LS/2, to combo runners Fusion and Carbonlite. My first thought was this was just a new way to try and reduce runner weight while also making it harder to manufacture aftermarket steel.

This was not for weight reduction.

I read that they have the pivot point moved back 20mm on Quad and Zuperior profiles.

In neutral skates, I would like it, but if you are in a boot that is already pitched, like Vapors, it might become too much.
Is it possible to remove the PP/Pitch from a Quad or Zuperior Profile, or should player in Vapors look at other profiling alternatives?

If it is possible to profile them neutral. How is it done, what instructions should the tech follow?

It's very simple. Any decent store should know how to do this, If they don't, you should not let them touch your skates.

I have small feet, currently in a pair of TF9 size 4, so running 238 runners.  The stock True steel profile made me feel like I was trying to balance on a rolling pin.  I had a local shop do a Prosharp Quad profile (not sure which version he ended up using, I'm assuming the XXS), which definitely helped, but think I might want to try something even more stable, given how short the runners are.  Should I be looking at the Zuperior profiles (seem marketed towards agility) or the more basic dual profiles like the Combi 10/13 or the Detroit?

    Go with the Zup.

Q1: Are FT6s equally on the heels or are they more pitched forward?

Q2: If I am going to continue with these. I definitely need to profile some pitch into them. Does anyone know what amount of pitch or what profile would get them close to the Vapors?

Q3: Would it be worth it to try to fix these with profiling or would it be better to change them for Vapors or Jetspeeds?

1: FT6 is a softer boot which allows more forward flex. This will give the feeling you are more on the balls of your feet.

2: As others mentioned, you would need to bring both the old and new steel in to a knowledgeable store so they can copy the profile.

3: That depends on you, as this is a debatable question. If you want to spend the time to get the skates dialed in, because you like them, then keep them.

I am a huge believer in the "If it ain't broke, don't fix it.” If you know what kind of skate you like, and have been using such skate, why change things?

I always thought the blade stiffness was more related to the feel of the puck and softer was more beneficial for receiving passes, not much of a difference for shooting, not sure if that's totally accurate but my uneducated logic seems to think it makes sense.

    That's accurate.

I thought Bauer was only offering it as part of the MyBauer program?

I know True is releasing their version at full retail at some point.

TRUE has had the P90 at retail for more than a year.

Bauer released the P90 at retail with the new Vapor line.

Sherwood released the P90 with the latest versions of their sticks.

My son is a 90TM convert this season and I can usually find a few between Bauer and Ccm on the rack at retail. Not sure if it’s growing in popularity or I just notice it more now…

It's still hard to find the P90 as most retail stores as they have been nervous about ordering and not being able to sell them. They instead prefer to stock P92/P29 and P28.

Thanks for answering. The new fit system just doesn’t work for me. I’m scanned at a 6.5 fit 2 in hyperlites but the heel feels too sloppy. When I try the fit 1 it feels too tight in the forefoot/not enough volume.
I recently bought a pair of used pro stocks with E/A fit system in the hyperlite 2s and it’s so much better. Is that possible for a normal person to get?

Im really curious about the shadows and am leaning to the custom route but am unsure of what they can do. I heard there were going to be custom orthotics so that might be different too, but basically my foot is shaped like a duck foot, wide forefoot, narrow heel.

They already have custom orthotics, the Bauer Speedplate.

Bauer is not changing the custom skate process for 2024. There are rumors though that in 2025 Bauer will have a new scanning system and allow more options at the retail level.

Any players/retailers seeing broken blades on Ft6 pro’s? Had two break in almost identical places on blade (p29). One inside warranty, the other was the warranty replacement (which apparently has no warranty). Stick isn’t abused, and it’s not used for slap shots / one timers heavily.

Have gone years and many sticks without issues like this. I’m hesitant to point fingers, because of so many variables with how sticks get used - but something doesn’t seem right with the build of the stick.

Additionally, it seems like stock of the p29’s is critically low. Could be because of the popularity, but it doesn’t seem like CCM is producing the stick right now. Have they stopped production?

I have personally had no issues with the FT6 Pro. Have only seen one break, at the handle, when a college player crosschecked an opponent in front of the goal. 😉

FT6 stick production is ramping down as the FT7 Pro is getting queued for production.

I had the trigger 8 and used it for maybe 5 periods total. I ended up selling bc I didn't like the puck feel. But what I was concerned about was the dual core blade. I had a feeling a new blade tech could compromise what previously was tried and tested durability wise. Before I sold it I did notice when I checked the blade for stiffness, I heard an ever so soft creak which I've never experienced with ccm since the using ccm. That confirmed it for me to sell and not look back lol. Ida a shame. Ccm was doing so well with durability for the most part.

Maybe it's time to stick up on whatever remains or the ft 4 and 5s

I have seen no issues with players using the Trigger 8 Pro. Though I would imagine the dual feel blade would likely lose pop over time.

Apologies if this has already been posted or discussed.

How much customization can you get if you’re not a pro player or connected to the industry? Can you still specify forefoot width or heel width like the previous fit system or is it something entirely different now. I understand that they aren’t built on new lasts but is it really just specifying custom lengths and color ways?

    thanks

You cannot specify much of anything. It's all based on your scan and any notes you provide.

Is there something specific you are wanting to have adjusted or customized?
