Watched it. It was a weird video. Was it an infomercial? Chris and his crew were nowhere visible in it at all. Also a bit random with the Special Mr. Graf 82 Edition skates. Why 82? 80 makes more sense to celebrate.

Impressive they made the Cobra in a year. I know it has a lot in common with Tuuk Custom+, but it also has some nice improvements in comparison. Maybe that's not that surprising since they knew figure skating so well at the time.

I mean, the description clearly says it's a mini documentary. Did you even watch the video? The dude is 82 years old, so 82 skates, not 80.

  2. What's the learning curve like when it comes to manual sharpening? I'm not 100% happy with my Sparx, and I've considered getting something like the Wissota 911 for home use. I'm on the ice 4-6 times a week, and my wife a similar amount, so we sharpen quite a bit. Is there another machine other than the Wissota worth looking at? Not sure if I'd actually pull the trigger, but it's something I think about a lot.

I mean the liner that sits between the back of your fingers and the back of the finger padding inside the gloves. I think we're both talking about the same thing though lol. Mine don't slip under but I've had gloves where the padded liner did lift a bit so when putting my hand in the glove initially could cause my finger to catch under the liner.

Yup the flex thumb is about 50% mobility as other brands but tbh when holding a stick I actually don't really flex the thumb all that much. It's noticeable when just wearing the gloves and making a fist but when holding a stick I barely notice a difference between lock thumb gloves and even the most mobile flex thumbs.

Btw with ur flex thumb, did they remove the thumb loop on the palm or is it there? I ask bc I'm not sure if mine was removed as an oversight or if that's just what they do for flex thumb options.

Yeah, sounds like we're talking about the same thing. I don't have a thumb loop either, it's just attached right to the thumb. I thought it was because of the palm material (black mustang) I got, but sounds like it's just from the flex thumb option. It doesn't really bother me, it moves just enough compared to a full lock thumb to make me not hate it.

Yup I got flex thumb. The thing about this was I think for flex thumb they don't give you the loop thumbs that adds even more mobility for some reason. The lock thumb comes with the loop thumbs palm but this didn't.

They cost me 280 cdn shipped. They had a 15% off promo for the mth of Sept. It's crazy bc shipping was $55 just from Ontario to BC in Canada which to me is ridiculous. But after the discount the total cost was more or less the same as getting the standard eagle aero pro in store which retail for about 250$ cdn before tax.

That said, my next order when they have another sale, I think it will be more expensive since I'll be adding the loop thumbs, double thick backhand pad and finger liners. The standard ones are fairly thin and feel noticeably less cushioning than modern ccm Bauer and warrior gloves. They're still comfortable but I like more plushness.

I'll probably also get a diff palm as well. These are just the standard msh3 palms.

Probably a good idea to get them to provide me with a complete list of options since the online form is pretty limited, especially with colors.

By finger liners, do you mean extra padding at the top of the fingers? The main thing I don't like about my Eagles is the thin liner at the top of them isn't glued down or something. So while I'm playing, my finger ends up moving behind the liner somehow. If they could glue that down or thicken it up, it may fix that issue. The flex thumb also isn't really much of a flex thumb, but it's better than a full locked thumb.

Thanks for the run down. I typically wear pro stock socks with Kevlar backing, warroad long sleeve pants, and short wool socks for my feet

Dumb question but, do you wear a separate jock with those warroad pants? And I'm guessing whatever separate jock you wear also holds your socks? I've thought about trying those but not sure what I'd do for jock and socks.

I don't quite understand the statement, stepping on a golf ball inside the skate. Do you have a unique foot condition (bump, bone, spur, ect)?

If the TRUE skates fit you well, the performance is good, why are you looking to move to CCM or Bauer?

It's difficult to explain. It just felt like I was stepping on something inside the boot. As if I put the boot on and there happened to be a golf ball underneath my arch. As far as I know, there's nothing specifically unique about my foot. But every retail skate I tried had the same result. Didn't matter if I tied them differently or used different insoles, it always happened.

As for looking to move to something else, really just for curiosity's sake. I haven't really had any major issues with my Trues aside from having to replace the rivet on the tendon guard a few times. But it does get slightly annoying having to baby them so much and then the difficulty in putting them on/taking them off gets old.

I have tried all three brands, and the various models within the brands:

    • TRUE: TF Custom, SVH Custom, Cat Pro,
    • CCM: Total Custom and Total Custom Plus
    • Bauer: Custom

They all have pros and cons. What I like or feel works best for me, might not be the same for everyone else. Maybe if the question was precise, the answer would be clear?

Simply put, what are we trying to fix?

Personally, every time I tried retail skates, I felt like I was stepping on a golf ball inside the skate. I tried all sorts of combinations of insoles and widths. This is before Bauer and CCM released the fit systems, so I was trying the different skate lines. When I decided to just get some Trues, it completely fixed that issue. Now I'm trying to decide what to get next, but it's difficult to tell if a custom CCM or Bauer would keep giving me that same problem I had in their retail skates or not. It's not something I could ever tell would happen when just trying the skate on, I had to actually go skate in them. Just having it on and tying it up didn't give me any indication on having that issue or not.

Sigh.... There is a lot crap in this thread that really bothers me. Some comments approach Facebook level garbage. I'm not gonna get into it though.

My question is simple. Who here has tried full customs from all three brands? Their input would be relevant in answering the OP's question. Though, which is better, is somewhat vague. All other comments are recommendations based of personal bias and therefore should be ignored.

You should actually call it out if it's that bad. Give us some better information if you have it.

Hills recently released a video talking about his experience with cat pros and compared them a little bit to his CCM customs. I'm waiting for his full review on the CCMs before I decide what to get next, but that latest video has me leaning toward trying cat pros.

CCM Total Custom is more of an assembly line production, whereas the Total Custom Plus is more of an actual custom fit.

    TRUE SVH is full custom.

Bauer is all assembly line production.

What does that mean in layman terms though? Does CCM make a last and then build the boot around the last if its total custom plus? Or do neither CCM options use a last?

  10. 14 hours ago, Sniper9 said:

Correct me then instead of making a vague statement. Both ccm and Bauer make custom skates with prefabricated shells which are pressure molded to your foot last.

My understanding was that only True and CCM made an actual last of your foot to mold them to. Bauer customs are more just a set of options rather than a true custom of your foot.

    But I'm probably wrong.

  11. Ok I'm having a weird thing going on with the new sharpener. I've been using 5/8 fire. I did a fresh sharpen with 4 passes before my game last night. Toward the end of the game, I felt like the outside edge was completely gone. Just felt like I had no grip. I don't remember having this happen when using my friends Sparx.

Anything I should check to try to resolve it? I checked the alignment on the Sparx last night before I sharpened. I don't have an edge checker, wondering if maybe I need to pick one up, if it could be due to uneven edges?

    Howdy,

So, I actually did do this... Its been a handful of skates now and honestly I don't think that if I hadn't done the sharpening myself I'd have know I went from 3/4 Fire to 5/8 Fire.

Does anyone know what the actual profile differences are between the Fire rings?  As I understand it, the Fire profile is just a normal ROH, with the floor of the U shape filled in.  I'm wondering if that's right at all first.  Second, if that's correct, is the "floor height" relative to the tips of the edges the same for all the Fire profiles?

Again, I feel essentially no difference between the 5/8 Fire and the 3/4 Fire on the ice.  I'm far from the world's best skater and this wasn't a back to back thing, however.

    Mark

I don't have an answer to your question, but I went from using 11/16 to trying 5/8 fire and felt zero difference. It's weird, in the past regular 5/8 felt way too sharp when it was fresh. But the 5/8 fire felt like it was the same bite as 11/16 but a little more glide.

I am the source. I worked with Sparx on that. You're welcome.

So if I'm reading this right, fire 5/8 would give me the same bite as 5/8, but the glide of 1 1/4? If so, that seems pretty legit and might be worth buying a ring for it.

It's been a while since I've tried traditional 5/8, but the biggest thing I remember is having to put more effort into skating since it had noticeably less glide than 11/16. The bite was great on turns but I didn't like it as much on stops. I think I'm a better skater now though, so maybe it wouldn't be as big of a deal.

From my experience. The 5/8ths Fire felt more like a 3/4 ROH.

Why not just keep that 11/16ths fresh? It's less wear on the ring. I'll normally do 2 passes for every 4 hours or ice time.

Biggest issue is that I don't currently have my own Sparx, so I have to bring my skates to a friends house. I play 4 times a week, so that would mean going over there once a week. I'm pretty close to just pulling the trigger on one now that my wife is also playing.

Well, I can't seem to locate it now, but IIRC the Sparx Blog had a comments section at the end where I had asked this question a long time ago when I actually made the purchase.

I believe that at the time, whomever was in charge of answering the posts (not Russ), stated something to the effect of the glide was about 1/4" more more shallow in feeling as compared to the stated ROH on the ring. I also believe they said the bite felt like that of 1/8 more shallow, as well.

In this example, a 5/8 would have the bite of 3/4, and glide of 7/8.

If you're not totally confused yet, the takeaway is that the Fire rings overstate bite and understate glide by non-trivial amounts.

In your case, if you're doing one sharpen after 5 skates, I think you might benefit from going more shallow and doing a quick refresh between every skate. This has worked for me and is why I'm able to go down to 3/4 Fire. After one skate I notice the difference and the steel needs another pass on the machine.

I still have teammates that get 3/8 on their steel just to maintain bite between semi-annual visits to the pro shop... Some of these guys played AAA and into college or higher. I also played with one guy over the Summer that started NCAA III this Fall, and he said he has a Sparx and puts on a fresh 3/8 every skate. He's a pretty big dude, and quite the skater. One of the best I've seen, actually. YMMV.

Edit: I found this on Reddit, though I'm not sure the source.

I think ultimately I just need to buy my own Sparx so I have full flexibility of sharpening however and whenever I want. I was just interested in trying fire since they say the glide is improved.

  15. 48 minutes ago, pgeorgan said:

    Lol agreed.

When I think of ways to materially improve my game, having a mirror finish on the bottom of my steel is probably at the bottom of the list.

Having regular access to a Sparx has allowed me to go from a traditional 7/16 to a 3/4" Fire, which according to Sparx literature is probably closer to a  1" traditional ROH.

That being said, the Wissota speed skate someone posted here claims it's backed by science. I'd love to have it linked here for the wonderful folks of MSH. Any takers?

Does that mean a fire 5/8 is closer to an 11/16?

I like the way fresh 11/16 feels, but I feel like I need another sharpen after 5 games or so. I don't like fresh 5/8 but it seems to last a little longer.

If a fire 5/8 feels closer to a 11/16, I wonder if I should just give that a shot.

Has anyone tried the true tongues with the met guard? I always suffer from lace bite because my ankles are so skinny. It's not bad yet in my customs but I was wondering if these tongues might really help eliminate it? Even in my customs I have to crank the laces pretty tight to get a good heel and ankle lock.

I use the felt t-guard tongue (https://www.hockeyvancouver.ca/products/true-t-guard-felt-replacement-skate-tongues) and haven't had any issues with lace bite. I don't really tighten my skates at all until I get to the third eyelet, the rest are just barely snug against the tongue.

  17. Anyone know if the tendon guard is different on the new SVH? I got my pair in December 2019, just had the tendon guard fly off during a game last night. Never had that happen before, but I have had to replace the rivet in each skate once or twice in the time I've owned them. I'd be interested in upgrading if they fixed the tendon guard and/or if the skates are significantly lighter.

I'd be tempted to just go custom in some other skate except that the Trues just fit so well and I have zero pain at all.

  18. I just switched to a pro stock supertacks girdle. The part that you step into on mine velcros around the front, so you can just unvelcro it and put it on like a wrap girdle. I haven't seen that in pictures of others, so I wonder if this one was modded to work that way previously.

So far I like it. Seems less restrictive, lighter, and more protective than the pants I was wearing before. The only downside I see right now is its a pain to put the shell on (pro stock PP10), the inner belt loop just seems to snag on everything when I pull it up, even if I loosen it up a ton.
