What's the learning curve like when it comes to manual sharpening? I'm not 100% happy with my Sparx, and I've considered getting something like the Wissota 911 for home use. I'm on the ice 4-6 times a week, and my wife a similar amount, so we sharpen quite a bit. Is there another machine other than the Wissota worth looking at? Not sure if I'd actually pull the trigger, but it's something I think about a lot.

I just wish they were more available and we didn't have to hunt a pair down for ourselves.

Yeah, sounds like we're talking about the same thing. I don't have a thumb loop either, it's just attached right to the thumb. I thought it was because of the palm material (black mustang) I got, but sounds like it's just from the flex thumb option. It doesn't really bother me, it moves just enough compared to a full lock thumb to make me not hate it.

By finger liners, do you mean extra padding at the top of the fingers? The main thing I don't like about my Eagles is the thin liner at the top of them isn't glued down or something. So while I'm playing, my finger ends up moving behind the liner somehow. If they could glue that down or thicken it up, it may fix that issue. The flex thumb also isn't really much of a flex thumb, but it's better than a full locked thumb.

Dumb question but, do you wear a separate jock with those warroad pants? And I'm guessing whatever separate jock you wear also holds your socks? I've thought about trying those but not sure what I'd do for jock and socks.

Any thoughts on how less protective the FT6 shins would be vs the ASV? I like the ASV Pro's I have except for the break in the liner rubbing on my shin in a weird way. But I wouldn't mind having a little slimmer of a shin pad if they're not that much less protective.

That's probably something I should look more into, cause I have no idea. I've never had any issue with shoes or anything so I've never gone to a podiatrist or had a doctor take a look at my feet.

It's difficult to explain. It just felt like I was stepping on something inside the boot. As if I put the boot on and there happened to be a golf ball underneath my arch. As far as I know, there's nothing specifically unique about my foot. But every retail skate I tried had the same result. Didn't matter if I tied them differently or used different insoles, it always happened. As for looking to move to something else, really just for curiosity's sake. I haven't really had any major issues with my Trues aside from having to replace the rivet on the tendon guard a few times. But it does get slightly annoying having to baby them so much and then the difficulty in putting them on/taking them off gets old.

Personally, every time I tried retail skates, I felt like I was stepping on a golf ball inside the skate. I tried all sorts of combinations of insoles and widths. This is before Bauer and CCM released the fit systems, so I was trying the different skate lines. When I decided to just get some Trues, it completely fixed that issue. Now I'm trying to decide what to get next, but it's difficult to tell if a custom CCM or Bauer would keep giving me that same problem I had in their retail skates or not. It's not something I could ever tell would happen when just trying the skate on, I had to actually go skate in them. Just having it on and tying it up didn't give me any indication on having that issue or not.

You should actually call it out if it's that bad. Give us some better information if you have it. Hills recently released a video talking about his experience with cat pros and compared them a little bit to his CCM customs. I'm waiting for his full review on the CCMs before I decide what to get next, but that latest video has me leaning toward trying cat pros.

What does that mean in layman terms though? Does CCM make a last and then build the boot around the last if its total custom plus? Or do neither CCM options use a last?

My understanding was that only True and CCM made an actual last of your foot to mold them to. Bauer customs are more just a set of options rather than a true custom of your foot. But I'm probably wrong.

Ok, I got an edge checker. Looks pretty square to me

Yeah, I used 5/8 fire (different ring, I bought a new one for mine), same skates. I'll grab an edge checker and see if that's part of the issue.

Ok I'm having a weird thing going on with the new sharpener. I've been using 5/8 fire. I did a fresh sharpen with 4 passes before my game last night. Toward the end of the game, I felt like the outside edge was completely gone. Just felt like I had no grip. I don't remember having this happen when using my friends Sparx. Anything I should check to try to resolve it? I checked the alignment on the Sparx last night before I sharpened. I don't have an edge checker, wondering if maybe I need to pick one up, if it could be due to uneven edges?

Finally bit the bullet and got a Sparx. Is there any trick on setting the height of the ring? I'm not sure if I'm setting it too high or too low, or if it really matters all that much.

I don't have an answer to your question, but I went from using 11/16 to trying 5/8 fire and felt zero difference. It's weird, in the past regular 5/8 felt way too sharp when it was fresh. But the 5/8 fire felt like it was the same bite as 11/16 but a little more glide.

So if I'm reading this right, fire 5/8 would give me the same bite as 5/8, but the glide of 1 1/4? If so, that seems pretty legit and might be worth buying a ring for it. It's been a while since I've tried traditional 5/8, but the biggest thing I remember is having to put more effort into skating since it had noticeably less glide than 11/16. The bite was great on turns but I didn't like it as much on stops. I think I'm a better skater now though, so maybe it wouldn't be as big of a deal.

Biggest issue is that I don't currently have my own Sparx, so I have to bring my skates to a friends house. I play 4 times a week, so that would mean going over there once a week. I'm pretty close to just pulling the trigger on one now that my wife is also playing. I think ultimately I just need to buy my own Sparx so I have full flexibility of sharpening however and whenever I want. I was just interested in trying fire since they say the glide is improved.

Does that mean a fire 5/8 is closer to an 11/16? I like the way fresh 11/16 feels, but I feel like I need another sharpen after 5 games or so. I don't like fresh 5/8 but it seems to last a little longer. If a fire 5/8 feels closer to a 11/16, I wonder if I should just give that a shot.

I use the felt t-guard tongue (https://www.hockeyvancouver.ca/products/true-t-guard-felt-replacement-skate-tongues) and haven't had any issues with lace bite. I don't really tighten my skates at all until I get to the third eyelet, the rest are just barely snug against the tongue.

Anyone know if the tendon guard is different on the new SVH? I got my pair in December 2019, just had the tendon guard fly off during a game last night. Never had that happen before, but I have had to replace the rivet in each skate once or twice in the time I've owned them. I'd be interested in upgrading if they fixed the tendon guard and/or if the skates are significantly lighter. I'd be tempted to just go custom in some other skate except that the Trues just fit so well and I have zero pain at all.

I just switched to a pro stock supertacks girdle. The part that you step into on mine velcros around the front, so you can just unvelcro it and put it on like a wrap girdle. I haven't seen that in pictures of others, so I wonder if this one was modded to work that way previously. So far I like it. Seems less restrictive, lighter, and more protective than the pants I was wearing before. The only downside I see right now is its a pain to put the shell on (pro stock PP10), the inner belt loop just seems to snag on everything when I pull it up, even if I loosen it up a ton.

Is he the only player also using the shift holder? Kinda surprising to see.
