  1. Thanks for you comment. Never had that kind of issues in the past with other skates. But these are the stiffest I've ever own for sure. I'm really not sure if the wounds are caused by eyelets or just my ankle rubbing on the liner. But the more I think about it, the more I suspect the eyelets. I don't think that kind or injuries could be caused just by friction on lining. Yeah, looks like when I put all my 180lbs on my feet, arches tend to collapse inwards. And all my shoes (cleats, courts, work shoes) tend to wear on from the interior part of the soles. I'm probably a pronator.
  2. Bought new during summer 2023. Skate is CCM Ribcor Platinum - mid range stuff. worth around $450-500 cad Previous pair was also Ribcor and loved them. So I played about 12-14 games so far this season with the skates. Beer league. Baked skates properly in store, twice (when new and more recently). Currently I feel they are starting to break just like they should, which is great. Two issues (well maybe it's only one issue) 1) the tongue on both skates tend to twist towards outside direction. Each and every game in middle of first period I need to unlace the top 4 eyelets and redirect tongue through the center then retie. 2) issue #1 causes big pain on inside bone of both ankles. Hurts really bad, bleeds and harms my game. Wounds were larger and worse during December. I have a narrow foot. I feel the Ribcor are well suited to my foot. I don't feel "lost" in this skate and I feel the support is pretty good. Special note: i'm using Super Feet insole since day 1. Used the same insole with previous pair and all was perfect. Could it be what causes the issue? Maybe it puts my foot a tad higher than it's supposed to be so my ankle bone isn't at the right spot (vs standard CCM insole?) Since superfeet insole look ticker on heel portion. So question for Skates guru. What can cause tongue to twist like this? I never experienced something like this before. I always tie my skates more tight than loose. Can Super Feet insole be part of the issue? Should I consider having the skates in the inside portion "punched" to be a little more wide? I think I'll throw the stock cheap ccm insole in the skate for the next 2-3 games to see if that makes any difference.
  3. Profile #3 - Quad II (7-10-13-16) on CCM Ribcore Titanium 9 1/2 size Steel - stock XS1 blade 280mm Hollow - 11/16'' About Me - I started playing/skating when I was 5 then played at good level until 13 in novice/minor leagues. Then stopped and played only maybe 8-10 times/winter at local public outdoor hockey rink just for fun until mid 30s.Then restarted in beer league at 35. Now in my late 30s. I'm a forward. I'd say a good skater and a tad faster then average skaters. Almost 6' tall and 185lbs Review - Before Quad II, I tried CAG one 30-65 (or 35/65 cant remember), then 9' single radius, then Quad 0.5. I didn't like the CAG BTW. overall the Quad II is my favorite so far. The balance is better than Quad 0.5 imo. I feel a little bit more forward pitch which I like. But difference in balance is minimal. The gilde and mobility are the things that are improved vs the 0.5. Way easier to initiate turns with the quad 2. And shorter/faster turns are easier to do with it. With the Quad 0.5, I felt more resistance while trying to do quick turns. As far as glide/speed, you can also feel top speed is higher and less fatigue during a game. Skating backwards felt similar to quad 0.5 but I'm not a defense man so didn't spend a lot of times backwards. Played one game with 3/4 ROH. Felt I missed a little grip in some situations. So the day after, I had the skates sharpened to 11/16. Maybe lost a bit of glide but felt more dialed to ice. I think I will end this season (until June) with 11/16. Acceleration - 4 Mobility - 4.3 Stability - 4 Speed - 4.5
  4. Had the quad II sharpened to 11/16 yesterday. Really happy with how it felt at my usual beer league game on the evening. Felt it was the right amount and balance of bite/glide and etc. I did replaced a guy in another beer league Thursday, and wasn’t totally comfy with 3/4. I’m going to stick with 11/16 for the rest of the season I guess.
  5. yeah you are probably right. The reduced bite vs previous setups makes me a bite less confident. But I just got to trust the blades/edges.
  6. Well just back from the free skate session at the local indoor rink. To be able to compare two sets of runners during the same session on same ice was very interesting and educational. I would recommend it to anyone that wants to live the true skake profiling experience. It the best way to appreciate profiled blades. Quad II (7-10-13-16) on XS1 vs Quad 0.5 (8-10-12-14) on steps black, both at 3/4 ROH 280mm runners. The Quad 0.5 with a little taller blades (about 2mm higher) - well the biggest difference I was able to feel is mobility/agility. The turns were way more easy to engage with the Quad II. Apply little weight on outside skate and it turned much easier that Quad 0.5. - Other difference is glide. I felt more fast (top speed) and less fatigue with the quad II. -Acceleration and power were similar. - Braking was more controlled with the quad 0.5. Don't know why. The grip while hard stopping was just better. -As far as balance, similar as well. Maybe a tinny bit more "balanced" with the 0.5. Hard to tell... I never felt I was going to fall or loose edge with the 0.5. But with the Quad II, since they are fast and the glide is better, sometimes I had the impression i was going to fall. But I didn't. The 0.5 overall felt more conventional in a way. Like more similar to the non-profiled skates I used to have in the past. THe quad II felt more profiled and "refined". Overall, this experience made me realize you just got to trust the blades/edge and full send it on the ice. BTW I swapped the runners 6 times during the 50 minutes session. The XS holders were flawless and blades easy to swap. Currently the Quad II is winner for me. But maybe 3/4 is too shallow for me. I will try 5/8 or 9/16 next time I think.
  7. yeah Yeah, before buying the Ribcores, I honestly didn't suspect the long journey it would bring me to. Before that I never heard of skate profiling, forward pitch, and stuff like this. I just knew about ROH sharpening, period. If I ever find the right profiling/pitch/sharpening combination that suits my tastes, I'll have the blades "measured" or recorded or whatsoever. because one day I'll need to buy new skates again.
  8. I only did a 30 min skate yesterday with the quad 2 but I kind of agree it felt a tad more forward pitched with the Quad2 than the 0.5. Which I liked. Probably because of the higher radiuses on rear portions of runners, right?
  9. Other update. Went to try Quad II (edited) 3/4 ROH at my outdoor local hockey rink today (no hockey game at beer league this week) Was sunny outside and not too cold (-7C) so ice was on the soft side. Well softer than the ice I usually play at beer league. But I immediately felt a better balance. Felt more "heavy" and solid on my feet vs the taller blades on Quad 0.5. Is it due to profiling and/or the reduced height of runners? However the overall acceleration/grip felt similar. But on that ice quality/condition it's hard to tell. I'll be able to better judge and do a more thorough review after a legit hockey game next Friday. I may go to at a free skating (indoor rink) Tuesday night also and bring both pair of blades (Quad 0.5 3/4ROH on Steps Black and Quad II - 3/4 on stock speedblade XS1) and make a more decent comparison in same ice conditions.
  10. As a follow up. I had my stock Speed Blade XS blades that came with the CCM Ribcores with a quad 2 profile (originally made a typo and wrote quad 1) 3/4 ROH, and asked the shop to remove about 1.5mm of the blade height. (remember the Steps Black were on quad 0.5 - 3/4) So I compared the net height of the XS vs Steps. the XS sits about 2mm lower than the Steps. Can't wait to try it and compare. I didn't have a chance to ask a shop to measure de radius on my old Reeboks but will do when I have the time.
  11. 3mm may be a little overkill. And yeah best case scenario is to find a profile that will offset the added height and help me retrieve the right balance. But since I tried 3 different profiles so far without being totally satisfied, I could end asking the shop to grind off a little more than usually.
  12. I may just send the stock runners that came with the Ribcore (XS 1) to have them quad 1 or something and ask them to remove 3mm or so of it while profiling. Cause the Steps black I bought them after the skates.
  13. So you mean since my blade height on the newer skates is way more higher, (I measured about 4-5mm more on the CCM than on the old 4Ks) then it would make me feel less balanced and hooked to ice? No matter the blade profile?
  14. You are right. It’s hard for olds like us to adapt. And I should bring the old Reeboks at a shop to ask them to verify what is the « profile ». i measured the blade in front mid and rear. It’s mostly equivalent all the way. Doesn’t look there is any pitch as the rear portion and front are identical. as far as CAG one, i tried cag 35/65 neutral before the 9’ rocker and quad 0.5. I’m not sure I liked cag. Well I’m more comfortable on the quad. I feel I have more grip and easier to find the edges with the quad. Today i went at my local outdoor rink just before the Super Bowl so my son and I had the whole ice for us. I tried the Ribcore (the one with quad) and had them sharpened at 3/4 ROH yesterday. They felt better than 5/8. Less tracking and digging in ice. I still feel like I’m too light on my feet and not dialed to ice. well not as much as I am with the old 4Ks. Beer leagues restart this week here in quebec after Xmas lockdown so I’ll have two games this wee to experiment things.
  15. I feel the Ribcores give me more height as there is more blade height vs the old Reeboks. But 100% agreed I should bring both pairs next time so same temp, ice quality, etc... to compare.
  16. Had the skates sharpened 3-4 times so far with the Quad 0.5 on it. Good old Blademaster machine each time. 9/16 - 5/8 ROH. Sharpened by experienced people each time. Yeah I thought it could be sharpening related, but honestly the 0.5 profile doesn't feel much different than what it felt when it was freshly profiled/sharpened by Elite Performance. Maybe I should try something more shallow, as most Quad people use something like 3/4 - 1''?
  17. Hey all, So I had my skates profiled to 0.5 last falls. 8-10-12-14 on 280mm step blacksteel on CCM Ribcor. I like the profile. But during the holidays I went several time at my local outdoor hockey rink to play with the kids, and I used my old Reebok 4Ks because I didn't want to break/damage the blades on my Ribcor. It made my realize that I have a lot more balance and I feel more solid and dialed to the ice with the Ribcor. (which are 288mm normal Proformance blade, which doesn't have a lot of steel left on it, never been profiled). With the Quad 0.5, I feel it's easier to feel I'm gone fall on my toes or my heels. Yes it's more agile for quick turns but I think I'd rather more balance. I feel I need more steel on ice. So, do you think I should try the Quad 2 (7-10-13-16) or they also offer another profile which is (6-9-11-26.) Or should I look for a dual 8-12 or 9-13. Or something else. The thing is, the only place that does quad locally is close of Montreal and is 3h away from my home so the total cost is high (two way shipment + cost of profilinf)... cost about $80 all inc. So I don't want to enter the hit or miss game. thanks
  18. Profile2 - Quad 0.5 (8-10-12-14) on CCM Ribcor 9 1/2 size Steel - Step blacksteel 280mm Hollow - 5/8'' About Me - I started playing/skating when I was 5 then played at good level until 13 in leagues. Then stopped and played only maybe 8-10 times/winter at local public outdoor hockey rink just for fun until mid 30s. Then restarted in beer league at 35. Now in my late 30s. I'm a forward. I'd say a good skater and a tad faster then average skaters. Almost 6' tall and 185lbs Review - Felt way better overall than the 9' single. The grip is similar, but it feels more natural and the glide is way better. you feel that the blade is at the right "height" in the ice when it digs in it. 9' was just to deep. You don't get tired as quick as the 9' . Easier to keep pace when you are cruising or at higher speed. Mobility is similar than 9'. Going forward to backward is way easier then 9' as well as stability/balance is better. Acceleration - 3.8 Mobility - 3.8 Stability - 3.6 Speed - 4 Very happy with it. But I've always liked my ROH deep like 1/2 or even 7/16. So I'll try 9/16 next time instead of 5/8. I don't think I'm a 1'' or 3/4'' candidate. update nov 26 2021: tonight was my second game with that profile and with 9/16 ROH. I think I found the sweet spot. Got used to profile and 9/16 suits better the hard surface of ice of the rink where I play every Friday at my beer league. Awesome. Now feels more confident on my skate and scored 2 goals tonite 🙂
  19. Profile 1 - base line control set Steel - Step blacksteel 280mm Hollow - 1/2'' About Me - I started playing/skating when I was 5 then played at good level until 13 in leagues. Then stopped and played only maybe 8-10 times/winter at local public outdoor hockey rink just for fun until mid 30s. Then restarted in beer league at 35. Now in my late 30s. I'm a forward. I'd say a good skater and a tad faster then average skaters. Almost 6' tall and 185lbs Review - This will be my control set. All my life never had my skate profiled until recently when I bought new skates and hated how they felt (no grip no agility) So I played 2-3 games with 9' single radius. Acceleration - 3.5 Mobility - 3.8 Stability - 1.5 Speed - 2 I had the quad 0.5 made to the blades after 9'. See my Quad 0.5 review.
  20. Yeah with the injury I didnt push too hard on crossovers but can't wait to try it more thoroughly. No doubt Quad 0.5 is going to be a game changer. To be able to skate with full trust and confidence is so important in this game.
  21. Just a quick update. Got a chance to try the Quad 0.5 5/8 ROH for first time today. Injured myself (ripped groin) about 5 weeks ago so it was my first skate (free hockey session at local rink). WOW quad 0.5 is awesome. Took 5 minutes to get used to it. Way better than 9' rocker. It just feels more natural. The overall glide was better. Plenty of grip without feeling the blade enters too deeply in the ice (9' felt like it digs too far). The balance is better as well. There is more steel on heel which helps. Easier to pivot from front to backwards. Mobility is similar to 9'. Well maybe it was a tad easier to do quick turns with 9'. Will need to do more sessions on quad to compare. Very happy overall. Now I feel I can skate decently 🙂 the fact that the shop removed some steel to do the quad also helped I think since I felt less "in the air". Lower center of gravity maybe. One thing to notice. The ice where I played is known to be "softer" than average. And the one where I play in my beer league each Friday is know to be harder than average. Maybe it will feel different friday. We shall see. I didn't feel the 5/8 was too sharpened. It felt perfect and I'm not considering going shallower for the moment.
  22. thanks for your input. I'm fully aware that tweaking is going to be required not matter what. not looking for hail-mary. But maybe a 20 yards pass from my own 35yard line. Thats the reason I want to know which profile is less toward the "extreme" but more moderate/ in between...
  23. yeah thanks. I did read that previously. Which seem to make sense.
