@jpeaslee yes, its definitely on the order form, the 1/4 adv facing was chosen from the drop down menu on the screen

Seems like you should have some ground to stand on.  I'd go back to the shop and talk to whoever is there.  If they don't fix it, I'd escalate it to the manager/owner and go from there.

@jpeaslee 3D scan, total custom.  no lacebite persay but having trouble getting the right "snugness" , as too tight gives pressure pain while too loose I get heel slippage. Definitely not getting the "wrapped" feeling of my VH's though

LHS employee tried to brush me off the depth issue as "fine and nothing to worry about" upon delivery lol . I thinking about raising the issue at this point to the store owner.

other minor beefs: requested SB black runners, got the cheapest SB regular runners

Weird.  Did they happen to review the order with you on the screen of the 3d Scanner?

I received full custom FT1 4 weeks ago, skated over 10 hours so far in the FT1  rotating with my current VH customs to ease the pain of the break-in

Specs: 8EE/B, same tongue as retail but black felt, black clarion liner, ankle donuts/foam,  **requested 1/4 inch advanced facing forefoot**

The length and width are good overall BUT

    Couple of major issues:

1)I'm still getting hot spots on the side of the big toes 1.25 inch from the tip of the toe (within the toe cap), ironically there was never even a pinch with retail 8EE's

2)they did not give me the 1/4 inch advanced facing I requested, sadly CCM did not inform LHS they did not do it (even after skates were delivered). It is obvious though when comparing with a retail  8EE, pencil test sits exactly flush on both the retail and custom skate at the 5th eyelet!

I'm not sure if I should request a remake or refund?? 😞

what do the members advise??? thank you

Sounds a little fishy about the advanced facing.  It's on option in their catalog and in the scanner that you can do 1/4 or 1/2 forward or 1/4 inward.  Was this a pro custom order, or a 3d scan total custom?  Are you getting lacebite or discomfort from the depth/volume?  Have you talked to the LHS/CCM about it?

  4. I just ordered some Sunday from North Georgia Hockey in Atlanta/Alpharetta.  I was pretty impressed with the guys at the shop.  Hopefully in 3-4 weeks I can post some actual feedback on how they turned out, but until then I'll just have to say the entire fitting process is pretty impressive. Here is a catalog of all the options (Compliments of Nicholas G).  The only option I think I had that wasn't listed in there was the lacelock.

  5. I ended up ordering some Custom AS1s this weekend.  Did the CCM scan and Bauer volumental scan at North Georgia Hockey in Alpharetta/Atlanta.  I'm about 3.5 hours away in Huntsville, AL but they're the closest place that does custom skates and I was passing through Atlanta anyway. Geoff and Alex are solid guys and I'd definitely recommend stopping by the shop if you're in the area.

Hopefully I'm not putting the cart before the horse on this, but I've struggled to get good fitting skates. I have an E width forefoot and a regular/narrow heel with high arches and a really high ankle depth. Nexus has been the closest to a good fit, but it's still too loose in the and just not a great fit all around. The new tacks line was a pretty good fit, but not enough volume and the toecap was a little narrow (my whole foot/toes are shaped like a V), Jetspeeds in a EE width were the same deal, but failed the pencil test even more. Supremes just feel terrible, especially in the toe cap.

Custom skates ended up being being

    • AS1 10D
    • +1/2 facing (though even with that it's still barely enough volume),
    • Donut ankle pad
    • Forefoot comfort pad
    • Oversized toe cap
    • +3mm Enhanced comfort pad
    • 7mm Tritech Pro Ribbed HPE White
    • Clarino Grey liner
    • Orthomove Insoles
    • +2mm runners

They said typical turn time is 4-6 weeks, but lately they've been closer to 3. Can't wait!

Got my RX3 gloves, elbows, and shins today. Have to say I'm just as pleased with the gear as I though I would be. The finish of the gear is top notch, just had one thread on the shins I had to trim (it was too long, no evidence of pulled out stitching). Tags all pulled out easily. The fit of the gloves and elbows are great. It's brand new, but already feels pretty good when stick handling. Tons of motion but no worries about protection. The hyper extension thumb protection is the best I have seen. The hex cell wrap is really form fitting and protective. The sleeve in the elbow pads is not loose, but it isn't tight enough it cuts off circulation and provides discomfort. The end of the gloves and the elbows meet up very well.

The shins are not bad. The shell provides great coverage and the liner is very comfortable. Strapped up they are very secure. Now I do have humongous baloon calves, even when I'm in great shape (right now I'm slightly overweight and losing), but I do wish for longer straps and more wrap anyways. The side wraps are good coverage, but I would prefer more. If you can see in the one picture, the rectangular stitching is the velco hooks. Had to really crank the strap to get the uncomfortable velcro off my leg, and there is still a bit there. I am worried that having to crank the straps could over stress them. I almost wish I could have the shell/liner of a 15" but the calf wraps and straps of a 16". @STXHockey if you're reading this, I would buy that product right away, perhaps call it a size + (size 15"+ size equals 15"shell/16" calves, etc.).

Any more thoughts on the shins after wearing them a bit?  I have 2 sets of RBK/JOFA shins that I love but they're just freaking huge and I've loved the rest of the stx stuff I've had and was thinking about pulling the trigger on the RX3 shins.

    1. Yes, Made at the St Jean factory

    2. An oversize toecap is available and may alleviate the chunky toe issue

    3. 70k with advanced facings would be a pretty good option for you then. You can advance the top 3 eyelets or the whole eyelet row, either 1/4 or a 1/2 inch.

    4. Strong recommend for making a trip to get scanned. It makes a big difference. You don't need to get scanned to order custom skates, but you really should if at all possible.

    5. You're a pretty big unit. You could potentially get 70K with more stiffness if you feel like you need the support.

    Hope this helps...

I've heard about guys saying the AS1 customs have a very contoured outsole, closely fitting their arch instead of being flat like a retail model. Any idea if the 70k would be similar or if the 2 piece construction would limit that?

In the past, skates that didn't have enough volume and we lacking arch support (took me awhile to figure this out) gave me terrible arch pain.  Insoles with high arch support and loosely lacing over the arch helped, but we're kind of annoying to have to do.

  8. I might have missed it somewhere, but are the total customs made in Canada?

I'm in Nexus n9000s now as they're the only skate I've found that had enough volume, but the rest of the fit isn't great.  My left foot is wider than the right and had to stretch that boot but it's still not great.  I've got high arches and really wide toes (they're also cartoon like, biggest toe is the longest, and they get shorter from there).  On boots or shoes, there's always a spot where my big toe pushes out on the inside edge of the toe of the shoe and stretches it out and I've got wicked calluses on that part of my toe.

I really don't want to drop over a grand for a pair of skates, but it seems like that might be a good route to go.  Then I also have to figure out which line to go with.  Trying some on, the 70Ks felt the best, but I way failed the volume test.  The AS1's did ok, came closer to passing volume but wasn't quite as comfortable overall.

I was told my the closest 3D scanner shop (still 4 hours away) that the XS holders aren't available until this summer.  Anyone else hearing the same thing?  I'm debating whether I want to go ahead and do this, or if I should wait till this summer.  I'm assuming that's when the FT2 and "90k" (or whatever it'll be called ) will be launched?

In the for what it's worth category, I'm also a big dude, 6'2" 260lbs, low level d2, high d3 skater, usually skate 3 times a week.

    Any thoughts?

  9. In the FWIW category, I was up in MN for a family reunion and managed to make it by General Sports in Edina/Minneapolis.  Had a really knowledgeable guy work with me on some skate options.  Unfortunately they hadn't gotten their CCM scanner in just yet, but he did go through some bauer skates and did the Bauer 3d fit.  It said I was a 10.5D in supremes.  He said the scanner tends to run big and had me try on a 9.5 and 10.  Now in my Nexus, My toe feathers the end of the toe cap if I'm standing straight up, and when i squat down, it barely pulls off.  I really felt like the 9.5 was too short, but the 10.0 wasn't as bad as I though, and I'm sure my heel would kick back in a little bit after a bake.  The width still killed me.  It was pretty uncomfortable on the outside of the ball of my foot, and my pinky toe bunched up on top of the other toes.

He pretty strongly recommended the True skates, went ahead and did a scan to potentially order some at a later date and mail them to me.  I'm warming up to the idea of the Trues, but I'm still just a bit skeptical of something that I can't even remotely try on before hand, something with zero local support for, and they still just look absolutely crazy to me.  I'm looking forward to seeing some more feedback from people doing the CCM customs.

To me, it seems like if you're going to drop $800+ on a pair of skates, I would go with True. I've been fitted for True, Bauer, and CCM using all of their gadgets and I found the Bauer and CCM scanners suspect. The Bauer 3D scanner recommended to me size 11EE Vapor but my toes touch the end of my boot and I had to have my skates stretched to be widened in my 12EE Nexus skates and I know others who have had goofy readings. The guy at the shop suspected that it wanted my in Vapors due to my relatively flat left foot even if the Vapor's are way too narrow for me and perhaps that because I probably could wear a size 11 skate on my right foot since it's smaller; I couldn't even get my foot in a 12EE Supreme when I tried them.

I got the CCM scan, too to see what my options where with them for a custom skate as if I'm having trouble with 12EE Nexus skates for width and volume, then there isn't anything that CCM makes off-the-shelf that would work for me. Much to my suprise, their 3D scan recommended size 11EE Tacks. On top of the fact that a fully custom AS1 is $1200+ and there is no option for a boot-only order, I don't trust CCM's scan results to invest in in getting a pair of their custom skates.

I found that the True fitting process was far more thorough than Bauer or CCM's where they would ask for height, weight, photos of your feet where they can circle and pinpoint areas right in the app of where you may have hotspots and also take photos and scans of your feet while forward flexing along with taking photos while in a Bradock-like device to make sure that they can see how big my feet actually are in scaled photos in case their scanning software does silly things like the other two companies. I also like the fact that I can get the boot only if I want and they will predrill them to whatever holder type and size you decide to go with. So, I can spend $840 on the boots, $70 on a pair of Lightspeed Edges and then Stepsteel Black, which I forget what I paid for those. Either way, still less than the custom AS1.

Where did you get scanned? Here in Alabama?

Buy a skate that solves all your other problems first - length, width, heel lock. If volume still fails you then buy some eyelet extenders, these will permanently fix your volume issues and you can move them to any other skate you choose in the future. Using eyelet extenders opens up your range of choices so they are well worth the money spent.

The only time I've seen pics of eyelet extenders, they're at the top of the skate, like top 2-3 eyelets.  Where I'm failing is like 4,5,6 down.  Do you just fasten them lower, or am I missing something here?

  12. I'm sure it's harder than it seems, but then again, it doesn't seem like it'd be THAT hard?  My mom has an old industrial sewing machine that'd make quick work of the stitching part.

I love my Easton/Bauer Pro15 bag.  The design of it is fantastic.  Dimensions are great (it actually fits in the trunk of my little BRZ.)  However, it doesn't seem that well made, the zippers suck, and I'd love a little more room.

My thoughts are to make something pretty similar but with a nice cordura material instead of this weird vinyl stuff they used.  Nice big #10 YKK zippers.  Might do something like the top flap on the Pacific Rink bags for some jersey storage and put another end pocket on instead of a helmet compartment.  Might also put in some mesh venting Grit Airbox style.

Am I under thinking this, or is it as do-able as I'm thinking?

  13. So the 70ks I was able to get in were 10.5D.  They feel pretty good.  The toe box is a little narrow.  Is the toe box wider in EE as well?  It still doesn't have quite enough volume to pass the pencil test, but it's close.  It feels tight in the heel.  With as moldable as these are, I'm wondering if I went with an EE and baked them, if it'd settle my heel in enough to give me a little more volume.  Also i keep reading about the tongues being moldable.  Even if i was still failing the pencil test, with this tongue, is it something I'd have to worry about lace bite with?

Speaking from experience, the Ribcor skates have a high eyelet wall, making them able to accommodate a larger volume foot.  Better heel lock than the nexus, and softer so it can mold to your foot better.

I actually just ordered a pair of 70k's to try (I love IW) and see if they work.  I tried a pair of the new supertacks and the volume was somehow even worse than the jetspeeds, and even in EE, the toe box was too narrow.  I'm really hoping is a good option.

My foot bulged out of the top of the Tacks line but the Ribcor 70K does the job quite nicely for me.

Mine did as well, to my surprise. A very nice skate

This is interesting.  When I was trying skates last year (mostly mail order, local shop doesn't stock much) I never thought to try Ribcores due to everything saying they're low volume.  I did try some tacks (the ones before the SuperTacks) and the volume wasn't much better than the jetspeeds in EE (which fit great except the volume).

If the new 2S comes with some of the features the 2017 1X comes with, the Supreme could work.

    What features are these?

You're not realizing how much of a non-market there really is for you. There's a reason Nexus sells terribly. Part of it I do think is marketability of Supreme and Vapor and those two names have been going strong for 20 years - but - Most people fit into those skates which is why they have more models and more people are in them. Not too many people need the width & volume of a Nexus.

The new Nexus line is launching in July, you'll have options again shortly. Tacks is next closest however those are narrower in all areas.

Really the thing with the nexus is not that I need the width. A supreme in EE fits my width just fine, i just need some more depth.

  17. Again, thanks for the feedback.  This:

    3 minutes ago, psulion22 said:

We're saying the same thing.  It's ok to lean on a guy or use a hand to guide ("push") him.  You're staying in your space.  Once you start pushing or using your body hard enough to knock someone down, especially by taking a stride towards them, it's not.

I used to get called for angling all the time, and couldn't figure out why.  I was entitled to that space, and never even changed my skating lane, and rulebook specifically says it's ok even in non-checking classifications.  Eventually a teammate told me to just "guide" the player towards the boards "gently" and always make sure you get control of the puck at the end.  (He actually said make love, dont F@%$ him)  I rarely get called for it now because I just skate parallel to him and the boards and step in front when he's out of room, lift his stick, and take the puck.  He can stop if he wants, but if wants to skate into the boards, that's on him.  It not always about what you do, but rather how you do it.

is a much more helpful answer and what I was looking for and asking for in the first place than:

    18 minutes ago, psulion22 said:

No one ever accused someone of playing too physical because they got pinned on the boards.  You're doing more than just getting yourself free, or just pushing in front of the net and you know it.  Period.  End of story.  You're looking for someone to tell you that what you're doing is ok like the other johnny try hards that have posted the same questions.  You know what you're doing wrong, it's up to you to decide whether to accept it or not.

I don't need justification for what I'm doing, if that's all I needed, I would have stopped with teammates saying I'm fine.  I do appreciate some of the feedback from you and the other guys.  I think I might also try asking some of the opposing captains and refs for some more specific feedback and advice on what specifically to change from people seeing what's going on rather than going off of my (probably poor) explanation of the situation or observations.  Not doubting you guys, but they potentially can give me a better answer than "and you know it.  Period.  End of story."

If you're questioning what's okay, then you already know the answer. That goes for most things in life.

Absolutely, I can concede to that.  What I'm trying to figure out is where the line is, where different people's opinions are with it.  That's one of the major perks of forums.

I really don't know how to make it more clear.  Are you going outside of your entitled space on the ice into theirs to make contact?  If you're pushing someone in front of the net, then I'd say yes.  If you're on the boards and have the puck, and are stepping towards a player to make space, then I'd say yes too (Forsberg loved to do this).  Again, you don't have to get out of the way, but you can't go into another player's space to initiate contact.  Initiate is the key.  In what you're describing, from both a playing and officiating perspective, I'd say you're playing too physically because you're the one starting the contact.  You can tie up and box out in front of the net, but once you start pushing (using your hands or not) it's probably going to far.

Well, that is more clear, haha.  So if I'm first on the puck and they come in and I get pinned against the boards, I'm stuck?  In my mind in that scenario, I'm not making first contact, but that seems like it's not the case.  If that's how it's supposed to be, that's fine, just not how I've been playing or seeing it often played.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding, but it seems like you and DKMiller are saying different things on what's kosher in front of the net?

I did not mean to be insulting, so please don't take it that way.  We've seen a lot of these types of threads (and I've seen them in other hockey related groups) and the best response is a harsh one that leaves no ambiguity.  I play a little physical myself, particularly when an opponent is trying to gain the blue line.  I will step up and try to get the pass or force the play off side and that does cause some contact.  Or I will turn and angle the guy towards the boards, then squeeze the play off and take the puck when he runs out of space.  It appears to be physical, but I'm not actually doing anything.  They skate into the boards on their own.  In either case, I'm not making any deliberate contact, and the other guy is more skating into me.  I'm not going out of my way to make contact with anyone, but I am entitled to my space on the ice and I'm not getting out of their way either (within reason of course).  If you're playing on the boards and in front, and you're going outside of your entitled space to make contact in their entitled space, you're probably playing too physically.

No worries man, I probably did take it the wrong way.  Open ice I'm the same way skating around players is easier than through them, I keep control of the play/puck better and maintain my speed.  On D, I will progressively step forward a little bit, but mostly just force them to skate to the outside (not physically, unless they decide to skate through me).  I might not have given that idea on my previous posts.

If I go to a puck at the boards first and there's a guy or two that come in behind me is where I was coming from on that front.  I don't know how I can avoid that contact, but if they're pinning me against the boards, am I wrong for skating away if I can (as long as I'm not throwing an elbow or dropping a shoulder?).  This is a scenario that guys tend to get pissed at and usually throw a hook or slash as I'm leaving.

I've been playing wing or center, but none of our other forwards back check much, so I do end up playing 3rd D a lot on defense, which on our team often leaves me covering the guy in the slot (I know this isn't great hockey, but it's our teams first season and we're definitely lacking in a lot of fundamentals.)  I hear "get the guy out of the slot" a lot.  Should I just be covering him, or moving him out of the slot?  If so, how?
