Flex problem

Recommended Posts

Ok I am 6'2 185lbs and I have used mostly stiff sticks but I dicided to try a shaft with more flex. I am used to 110-100 but I am trying 85&95.I wanted to try this to get a better shot. My problem is I heard with a whip like shaft it helps wristers but I find my wristers a little weaker and I can't go upstairs as well. I have noticed my slapshot is harder but again not very good for going upstairs. It seems with a stiffer shaft I can get under the puck easier to raise the puck. I have to admit I change blades and shaft too much which porbaly don't allow for a learning curve. Has anybody had the same problem? Do you think I need to spend more time with one shaft and one blade to use them properly or maybe I am just meant to stay with a stiff shaft?

Confused Sid

if all your shots are "lower", you may not be letting the shaft do the work.

i.e. letting it release.

with a stiff shaft you have to add more force, and force the shaft to bend all the way through the shot, and since it is stiff, it will release even though you have pressure applied to it.

on a whippier shaft, the kick of the shaft isnt as strong to over power the pressure you apply, hence the shaft stays bent during the whole shot and leads to lower shots.

you have to use slightly different technique, all you want to do is bend the shaft, and let it do the rest.

try applying less downward force, and more forward force..

good way to try and feel this is do the one legged shot brett hull does, with his wrong foot... ie. if your right handed, stand on right leg and shoot, use your weight to bend the shaft, and your hand to apply forward force

then try to apply to the rest of your shots.

...As an advocate of the whippier flexes, I feel I may be able to help (hopefully).

The trick to shooting with a whippy stick is wrist action. When I shoot, I usually get the shot started and let the shaft "bow-out" quite a bit before snapping my wrists through, which kicks the lower half of the stick (along with the puck) through the shot. I find that I don't need to put as much "oomph" into the shot when I'm using a lower flex; I just kinda let the stick do the work for me.

If you keep at it long enough, I'm sure you'll adjust. It's just a matter of time. Good luck.
